The Pakistani military announced on May 2 that it had conducted a “successful training launch” of the Abdali-I ballistic missile.

In a statement, the military said the missile launch was “aimed at ensuring the operational readiness of troops and validating key technical parameters, including the missile’s advanced navigation system and enhanced maneuverability features.”

The Abdali-I, also known as Hatf–II, is a solid-propelled tactical ballistic missile with a maximum range of up to 450 kilometers.

The missile is guided via an inertial navigation system. Pakistani sources claim that an option for terminal guidance is also available, which indicates that the missile can be equipped with something like an optical seeker that supports digital scene matching. Overall, the missile is thought to have an circular error probable of 100-150 meters.

While the Abdali-I is not capable of delivering a nuclear payload, it can accommodate single high explosive or improved conventional munitions warheads with a weight of up to 500 kg.

President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and military leadership congratulated the participating troops, scientists, and engineers for the successful launch of missiles.

“They expressed complete confidence in the operational preparedness and technical proficiency of Pakistan’s Strategic Forces to ensure credible minimum deterrence and safeguard national security against any aggression,” according to the military’s statement.

There was no immediate comment about the launch from India, which blamed Pakistan for the April 22 terrorist attack on the resort town of Pahalgam.

The missile was named after Ahmad Shah Abdali, a prominent Muslim conqueror of India, thus the test carried symbolic significance.

Pakistan denied any involvement in the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, which was claimed by The Resistance Front. Still, India expelled Pakistani diplomats, closed border crossings, and went as far as halting a vital water-sharing agreement for the first time ever.

Since then, tensions between the two nuclear powers have been on the rise with near-daily reports of clashes along the Line of Control, the de-facto border in the disputed region of Kashmir.
