The United States has resumed strikes against Iran, in another attempt to weaken the Islamic Republic’s grip on the Strait of Hormuz.
In its first attack against Iran in over a month, the U.S. military struck two launchers on Laraл Island late on August 30. Central Command (CENTCOM) said the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was preparing to launch rockets with naval mines into the waterway. Three people were killed.
Iran responded the next day, with the IRGC launching missiles at King Hussein and Al Azraq air bases in Jordan, and Iran’s army striking Al Minhad air base in the UAE with drones. Both bases host American troops.
Reports released after the clash suggested the Trump administration was planning further escalation, and that came on September 1.
A larger wave of U.S. strikes hit southern and southwestern Iran. In the Hormozgan province, a missile struck a residential building in the city of Kouhestak that was hosting a wedding. Five people were killed and 68 others were wounded. Moreover, three members of the Basij force were killed and several others wounded in a strike on Lavan Island. Meanwhile, in Kermanshah province, four members of the IRGC’s Aerospace Force were killed in another strike. At sea, drone strikes hit two Iranian government tankers.
CENTCOM said the strikes were a response to attempted IRGC attacks on commercial shipping and against American service members. The strikes hit air defense sites, radar systems, maritime assets, mine-laying capabilities, and communications sites, according to the command.
Iran struck back quickly. The IRGC targeted multiple U.S. bases across the region with missiles and drones, including Camp Titiin and Prince Hassan air base in Jordan, several bases in Iraq’s Erbil, and Ali al-Salem air base in Kuwait. It also shot down an MQ-9 Reaper drone. Iran’s army also launched retaliatory strikes with drones against Sheikh Isa air base in Bahrain, which also hosts American forces.
Following the strikes, the IRGC also announced that two tankers struck naval mines while attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz. This was likely a direct response to the U.S. attack on the Iranian tankers.
The U.S. refrained from launching any additional strikes overnight into September 3. Still, Kuwait reported a missile and drone attack from Iran.
More escalation is to be expected. Trump has already threatened Iran, saying that the Islamic Republic could be “totally wiped out as a country” if it repeatedly responds. The strikes on Iranian tankers were also reported to be part of a new U.S. “tanker-for-tanker” policy. Tehran is not likely to back down. Still, despite this escalation, a return to full-on war remains unlikely.
