The United States Department of Justice confirmed on June 6 that American forces seized the Davina, a supertanker with the capacity for up to two million barrels of oil.

In a statement, the department noted that the tanker is listed under U.S. Treasury Dept. sanctions on Iran’s petroleum and petrochemical sectors.

“The vessel is part of Iran’s Ghost Fleet, a network of illicit shipping facilitators that have enabled the Iranian regime to earn critical energy revenues, undermine stability in the region, and attack U.S. partners and allies,” it said.

The department added that the seizure is part of its ongoing work with our whole-of-government partners to “disrupt Iran’s illicit oil smuggling and revenue generation that benefit the government of Iran and the IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps).”

The seizure was announced earlier in the day by the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, which said that its forces had carried out a “maritime interdiction and right-of-visit boarding” of the Davina in the Indian Ocean.

The command said in a post to X that the U.S. Navy “will continue global maritime enforcement to disrupt illicit networks and interdict vessels providing material support to Iran, wherever they operate.”

Right after the seizure, he Islamic Republic of Iran Army said that its naval forces fired warning missiles and drones at two American warships in the Gulf of Oman, accusing the U.S. Navy of harassing maritime traffic and seizing commercial vessels and oil tankers.

The U.S. Central Command rejected Iran’s claim, saying it would have been a serious breach of the fragile ceasefire between the two countries.

“Iranian forces did NOT attack or fire at US Navy warships. Doing so would be a gross violation of the ceasefire,” the command said on X.

The seizure of Davina is another attempt by the U.S. to pressure Iran. In fact, it shows that Washington is expanding its blockade on the Islamic Republic beyond the Persian Gulf.

In line with this, the U.S. imposed new Iran-related sanctions on June 5. Six vessels were targeted, including four Panama-flagged tankers.
