Iranian missile and drone attacks have caused “unprecedented damage” to United States intelligence facilities and surveillance equipment across the Middle East, NBC News reported on August 25.
Citing four people with knowledge of the matter, the report said the attacks damaged buildings and intelligence-gathering equipment used by the CIA and other U.S. intelligence agencies. The damage is expected to require billions of dollars to repair or replace, according to the report.
The scale of the destruction is described as greater than any damage previously sustained by U.S. intelligence agencies, the sources said.
A CIA station in Riyadh, capital of Saudi Arabia, was struck by Iranian drones in March, Reuters reported last month. A separate CIA facility in eastern Iraq was also targeted.
Sources who spoke with NBC News revealed that additional intelligence sites had been hit by Iran but declined to provide further details. U.S. officials have also investigated whether Russia supplied Iran with drone technology or targeting information.

A recent defense analysis published by the BBC initially highlighted at least $800 million in structural destruction to key installations, including Ali Al-Salim Air Base in Kuwait and Al-Udeid in Qatar. However, as reported by The Times, subsequent evaluations estimate that total base repairs could soar between $5 billion and $9 billion, leaving several vital radar, communication, and THAAD air defense systems severely degraded or entirely unusable.
Combined with heavy hardware losses and interceptor depletion, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth recently testified before a Senate committee that active military operations have already cost the Pentagon $37.5 billion.
Meanwhile, external trackers from Brown University place total taxpayer spending exponentially higher due to an ongoing $1 billion daily burn rate.
Iran clearly succeeded in inflicting some serious damage to American infrastructure in the region, and this is clear in the U.S. recent decision to prioritize economic pressure instead of military action.
