Two Officers Killed In Iranian Revolutionary Guard Workshop After ‘Gas Leak’

A gas leak caused the death of two senior officers and wounded ten other people at an Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) worship in the central province of Isfahan on August 28, Iranian state television reported.

The Isfahan Provincial Guard identified the two slain officers as Captain Mojtaba Nazari and Lieutenant Colonel Mokhtar Morshedi, the report said, noting that the wounded were transferred to a hospital for treatment.

A statement by the IRGC on the deadly statement did not say if the two officers died from being asphyxiated by gas, or if the gas leak caused an explosion.

The deadly incident came amid high tensions between Iran and Israel over the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of the Palestinian Hamas Movement, in the Iranian capital, Tehran, on July 31. Iran accused Israel of killing Haniyeh. The country’s top officials, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, vowed to retaliate against Israel for the assassination.

Iran and Israel have been engaged in a decades-long shadow war across the Middle East and beyond. Although there is no evidence, it is possible that the incident in Isfahan was an act of sabotage orchestrated by Israeli intelligence.

Several incidents occurred at IRGC facilities in recent years. The most notable came in 2011, when a blast at a missile base near Tehran killed 17 people including Brigadier General Hassan Tehrani Moghaddam, who led the force’s missile program. Initially, Iranian authorities described the blast as an accident, though a former prisoner later said the Guard interrogated him on suspicion that Israel caused the explosion.
