Russia said on September 14 that a British soldier recently reported dead in Ukraine was killed while fighting for Ukrainian forces, contradicting the British government’s account that the service member died in a road accident.
The Russian claim was reported by state news agency TASS, which cited sources in the Russian Defense Ministry. It came hours after Britain’s Ministry of Defence confirmed the death of a British serviceman in Ukraine following what it described as a “tragic incident.”
TASS reported that Russian forces had “eliminated a British soldier fighting for Ukraine in the special military operation zone.”
The Russian Defense Ministry sources also addressed the British announcement directly, saying in a statement quoted by the news agency: “The UK Ministry of Defense has reported the death of one of its servicemen in Ukraine as a result of a ‘tragic incident.’”
“This is not the first case of a British soldier dying on the territory of the ‘independent’ state,” the statement continued.
The Russian account then listed a number of other Ukrainian military personnel it said had been killed along with the British soldier.
“On one of the fronts of the special military operation, 23-year-old Senior Lieutenant [NSU] Bik Nazara was killed. In the DPR [the Donetsk People’s Republic], Senior Lieutenant Taras Ivanovich Gnatyuk was killed.”
“The death of Junior Lieutenant Ivan Kushkevich, commander of an engineering platoon of the 703rd Support Brigade, has been confirmed,” the statement added.
TASS did not identify the British serviceman by name or provide details of where or how exactly he was killed by the Russian military.
The British government has not said that the serviceman was killed in combat. The death was described in British reporting as the result of a road crash in Ukraine, with the Ministry of Defence notifying the soldier’s family.
The incident is the second confirmed death of a British soldier in Ukraine. LCpl George Hooley, a paratrooper, was killed in December while watching a test of a new Ukrainian drone.
The Ministry of Defence also claimed at the time that the 28-year-old died in an accident away from the front line and that he was not involved in any combat operations in Ukraine.
The recent deaths point to growing British military support to Ukraine. Russia has warned more than once that it will target any foreign troops in the country.
