On June 30, ISIS said that its cells in northern Iraq had captured and executed an officer of the Iraqi National Intelligence Service (INIS).
In a statement released by its news agency, Amaq, the terrorist group said that the INIS officer was captured by its cells near the village of Tal Abtah, which is located to the south of the town of Tal Afar in the province of Nineveh.
Amaq released photos showing the alleged officer being executed with a bullet to the head in an unspecified desert area. The victim is yet to be identified.
The horrifying execution came following a series of Iraqi air and ground operations in the northern and western parts of the country that saw the neutralization of several members of ISIS, including prominent leaders. The INIS was involved directly or indirectly in all of these operations.
ISIS influence n Nineveh remains strong, especially in the areas bordering the Kurdistan Region where the Kurdish Peshmerga and the forces of the central government are rarely present. The terrorist group has been taking advantage of this security gap.
Executions remains one of ISIS’ favorite tactics to exercise power in its areas of influence. The terrorist group has relied on executions as a mean to intimidate and terrorize its opponents as well as civilians in its areas of influence since its rise in Iraq in 2014.
