Iraqi security forces have foiled an alleged plot to bomb the Badra oil field, arresting a suspect after finding components for an improvised explosive device (IED) in the trunk of his vehicle, Rai Al-Youum reported on July 21.
During initial questioning, the suspect told investigators he had been acting on the instructions of a foreign national, who allegedly paid him $2,000 to carry out the attack.
A review of correspondence between the two men found that the suspect had been offered an IED to plant near one of Iraq’s oil fields. A digital forensic examination traced the account used in the exchange to a phone number registered in Ukraine.

The suspect further stated that he had been recruited through a specialized online chat room he joined while searching for work, and that it was through this channel that the foreign contact drew him into the plot.
The investigation remains open as authorities work to establish the full circumstances of the case, according to the report.

The choice of target has drawn particular attention: Badra is one of the fields in which Russia’s Gazprom Neft holds a nearly 30 percent stake.
Located in Iraq’s eastern Wasit province near the Iranian border, the Badra field has a production capacity of roughly 60,000 barrels per day. While modest by the standards of the country’s giant southern fields, it remains a strategically notable asset for its role in the country’s broader energy output.
Coming amid a wave of intensified Ukrainian strikes on energy infrastructure across Russian territory, the plot foiled in Iraq indicates that the intelligence of the Kyiv regime may already be extending sabotage operations to Russian oil and gas assets in third countries.
