On May 19, a roadside bomb struck a tourist bus near the Giza Pyramids outside Cairo, wounding 17 people. This terrorist attack, which once again confirmed the complicated security situation in Egypt triggerted a fierce response by security forces. Just hours after the attack, authorities announced that security troops had eliminated 12 militants in the nearby area.
On May 21, the Interior Ministry released a statement revaling information about anti-terrorist raids near the coastal city of el-Arish in North Sinai. 16 militants were killed. Police found weapons, three explosive devices and an explosives belt on the site.
On May 16, the Interior Ministry stressed that 47 militants and 5 soldiers were killed in the framework of the operation in North Sinai. 158 “criminal elements” were arrested in border areas.
The Egyptian military also neutralised 385 explosive devices targeting security forces. The army did not specify when the deaths and arrests took place, saying only the fighting happened as part of “recent efforts” against armed groups.
