Prime Minister of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, has been approved for the position of the Acting President of the country.

Prime Minister of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, has been approved for the position of the Acting President of the country at a meeting of both Chambers of the Parliament, the RIA news agency reported, citing a representative of the legislature lower house of the Parliament.

According to the RIA’s source, Senate Chairman Nigmatilla Yuldashev withdrew his candidacy.

The first President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov died of a stroke at the age of 78 on Friday. According to the constitution of the country, Yuldashev became the Acting President.

According to the constitution, election of a new head of the state will be held within three months. A specific date of the vote will be designated by the Central Election Commission. According to experts, Mirziyoyev is the most likely successor to Karimov. Analysts also said that head of the National Security Service, Rustam Inoyatov, is among the likely candidates for the presidency.
