Washington agrees with Moscow that terrorist organizations are a part of the Syrian opposition, but cannot find a way to separate the oppositionists from the terrorists, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on September 2.

“One of the fundamental difficulties [in Russian-US talks] lies in the fact that we insist – and our American partners do not deny it – that the so-called healthy part of the opposition should be separated from radical groups and terrorist organizations,” Putin said in an interview with Bloomberg, published on the official website of the Kremlin.

The Russian President also pointed out that terrorists start “absorbing the so-called healthy part of the opposition.” “Among other things, it is no longer part of internal strife. These are newly arrived fighters who receive arms and ammunition from abroad,” Putin added.

The president stressed that the American partners agree with this, but “they do not know how to do it [to separate terrorists from members of the moderate opposition].”

I do hope that President Putin understands that his American partners would
wring his neck given a chance. Also a terrorist is only a terrorist
when they don’t act in western interests.
