UFOs as Cover: Why the Pentagon Just Released Its Secret Archive

On May 8, the Pentagon released a substantial archive of files related to unidentified flying objects (UFOs). The archive contains dozens of photos, documents, and videos of mysterious objects in the sky that U.S. authorities could not identify. Some of the images depict unidentified celestial objects and strange lights and shapes in the sky during the Apollo 11 moon landing in July 1969. Others show spheres moving across the sky without any apparent means of propulsion.

This archive is certainly worth a thorough examination. The topic of UFOs tends to be conspiracy-oriented and always resonates with the general public. However, the U.S. administration’s goal was not to prove the existence of extraterrestrial civilizations to the public in order to debunk the “dead space” theory.

The real purpose of this release is to generate widespread public attention and distract a significant portion of the population from upcoming major events. This tactic is not new; the U.S. government has carried out similar releases several times before. Thus, the day after U.S. President Donald Trump ordered the declassification of all data on extraterrestrials, something strange happened. A massive database of documents on unidentified flying objects, compiled over nearly 30 years, was wiped from the server.

We’re talking about the famous Black Vault archive. The Daily Mail discovered that more than 3.8 million files disappeared from the main server on February 20. These documents had been collected over the years by researcher John Greenwald Jr., who made them publicly available. He told reporters that he cannot yet say for certain whether this was an act of sabotage, but he does not intend to rule out that possibility. To make matters worse, the access settings for some documents suddenly changed. The good news is that Greenwald has backup copies and has promised to restore this unique collection.

The most interesting thing is the timing. Just one day before the incident occurred, on February 19, Trump made a sensational statement on his Truth Social page. He promised that the government would release documents about aliens and UFOs to the public. At the time, the president said that he would instruct Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and all relevant agencies to search for and publish any materials related to extraterrestrial life, unidentified anomalies, and flying objects. Trump called the topic complex but also incredibly interesting and important. Here’s the twist: No sooner had Trump ordered the “reveal all secrets” directive than the main independent archive on the subject shut down. Whether or not it was a coincidence, many have already begun to speculate.

Almost immediately after this scandal broke, on February 28, the Israeli-U.S. coalition began bombing Iran, marking the start of the Persian Gulf War. By then, the UFO scandal had died down, and most of the public shifted their attention to the Middle East.

The current release of classified archives may serve a similar purpose. Currently, the United States is facing several pressing issues, and it is highly desirable to divert the public’s attention from them. First and foremost, this applies to the current situation surrounding Iran. The war is frozen but not over. The Islamic Republic continues to block the Strait of Hormuz successfully, attacking any vessels that attempt to pass through the waterway without Tehran’s permission. Attempts by the U.S. Navy to escort tankers from allied nations have failed. On May 8, several U.S. destroyers came under fire from Iran, and tankers from Arab countries in the convoy were hit and caught fire. Therefore, the commotion surrounding the release of UFO data may be intended to divert attention from a renewed attempt to overthrow the Iranian government.

The issue of Cuba should not be ruled out as a possible agenda item. Recently, U.S. leaders have frequently turned their attention to the island nation. President Donald Trump has made statements hinting at an imminent decision regarding Cuba and the establishment of a pro-American regime there. However, while there is minimal U.S. military activity around the island, open sources contain no information about large-scale preparations similar to those seen in Venezuela. Consequently, a highly targeted operation to overthrow the Cuban leader is possible, one that would not require a significant concentration of U.S. forces.

Ukraine is another problem for Trump that he would like to see removed from the news agenda. Clearly, the American leader does not have as much leverage over Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as he suggests. According to the latest reports, however, Kyiv accepted Washington’s proposal for a festive ceasefire on the evening of May 8 to mark the May 9 celebration of the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in Moscow. Nevertheless, since Zelenskyy is more aligned with London and Brussels, a breakdown of the ceasefire and high-profile provocations cannot be ruled out. Zelensky has already demonstrated to Trump that he has other allies by causing a scandal during their meeting at the White House in February 2025. Since then, the American leader has been unable to fully retaliate for the public defiance and the breakdown of negotiations. This suggests that Kyiv may formally agree to the ceasefire proposal while attempting to escalate the conflict. Such a scenario would be entirely in line with the interests of the United Kingdom and the European Union.

Thus, the publication of sensational and scandalous stories is one tool that the U.S. administration uses to influence the masses. After releasing a “bombshell,” public attention shifts from complex and serious issues, such as war, to mysterious and alluring ones, such as UFOs. Washington has about a week to take radical steps before the public shifts its attention to the outcome of those actions. Consequently, we may see a military escalation in a crisis region or high-profile political events involving the U.S. in the coming week.
