Syria’s Interior Ministry announced on April 19 that security forces thwarted, in cooperation with the General Intelligence Service, an alleged cross-border attack close to the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights planned by a cell linked to the remnants of ousted leader Bashar al-Assad’s regime and Lebanon’s Hezbollah.
In a statement, the interior ministry said security forces “arrested members of a sabotage cell,” which “was working to carry out an attack from inside Syrian territory on targets outside the borders” from the southern governorate of Quneitra province. However, the ministry didn’t name the country that had been about to be targeted.
The ministry added the Quneitra incident was the latest among “several attempts to destabilize the country and undermine public security” involving remnants of the former regime and “unscrupulous individuals linked to Hezbollah.”

Photos shared by the ministry showed a concealed improvised launcher mounted on a mini truck which was seized from the cell, along with a number of 107 mm rockets.

These accusations were quickly refuted by Hezbollah, which described them as “false and fabricated,” and stressed that it has no activities in Syria whatsoever.
“Hezbollah, while rejecting these accusations in their entirety, is surprised by the repeated insistence on dragging its name into every security incident, as if there is a programmed attempt to hold it responsible for any event with the aim of distorting the image of the resistance and its fundamental and sole role, which is to confront the Israeli enemy in defense of Lebanon and its people,” the group said in a statement.
The latest accusations came amid a ten-day ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. The ceasefire was imposed by the United Stats.
Just last week, Syria accused Hezbollah of being linked to a cell that attempted to plant an explosive device in front of a house belonging to an unidentified religious figure in the Bab Tuma area of the Syrian capital.
Israel’s Kan public broadcaster and reports in Syria and Saudi Arabia named the figure as Rabbi Michael Khoury. Hezbollah, however, rejected these accusations.
Right after the start of the American-Israeli war on Iran, Syria began to escalate against Hezbollah, deploying troops along the border with Lebanon and uncovering several smuggling tunnels. Reports even suggested that the country’s Islamist rulers are planning a military operation against the group. Syrian officials have denied, but the recent accusations suggest that there is such an intention.
