On the night of March 22, 2026, the Ukrainian Air Force recorded the launch of approximately 139 drones from Russian territory, of which 127 were allegedly shot down or suppressed by electronic warfare means. The massed drone attacks continued throughout the day, affecting key infrastructure sectors: railway junctions, logistics chains, energy facilities, and fuel storage sites used for rear support of military operations.
In the Kyiv region, the strikes led to large-scale fires, particularly noticeable in the capital and its suburbs. In Brovary, facilities of Euronaftogrup LLC were damaged — a fuel storage tank with a capacity of about 200 m³ caught fire after being damaged, disrupting reserves of fuels and lubricants for transport and equipment — as well as Bosch Service, where a fire engulfed a 600 m² warehouse containing equipment for repairing dual-use vehicles, including pickup trucks such as the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger, which are used in logistics.
In Troieshchyna, warehouses burned, and acrid smoke from a large fire spread for dozens of kilometers, even shrouding the center of Kyiv. Additionally, the Metallurgicheskaya electrical substation and the Sapsan shooting range on the grounds of a former military unit were hit, where, according to some reports, Ukrainian volunteers were being trained under the guidance of instructors from NATO countries.
The strikes extended to other regions, focusing on military and transport hubs. In the Zaporizhzhia region, a drone control center in the southeastern part of the city was destroyed, with a detonation and the elimination of eight operators; 330 kV power line pylons on Khortytsia Island were hit, cutting off electricity to part of Zaporizhzhia and its suburbs, forcing military facilities, warehouses, and communication hubs to switch to generators and disrupting communication stability; the Sputnik 154/35/10 kV substation in the Khortytsia district was also put out of commission.
In Kharkiv, the Cosmopolite Hotel and the adjacent business center were heavily damaged, where, according to reports, mercenaries and drone production facilities were based. In the settlement of Dachne, a strike was carried out on the PS-110/10 kV Zanky-Tyagovaya traction substation, which powers the catenary system. Although train traffic has not been completely halted, the reduced stability of traction voltage creates a risk of cascading failures if the intensity of military transportation increases.
In the Sumy region, explosions were recorded at the Dynamo and SumDU bases, and the biathlon range, which was used to train special forces volunteers for a counteroffensive in the Ugroedy–Krasnopillya direction, was hit, with over 60 wounded evacuated; strikes were also carried out on a defunct meat processing plant with warehouse facilities and a railway branch for delivering equipment, on the Khimhorodok neighborhood with artillery units stationed on the first floors of dormitories, and on the southern outskirts of Konotop.
In the Dnipropetrovsk region (Loshkarivka), the ChME3-2961 shunting locomotive was hit. The disabling of the locomotive reduces the station’s shunting capabilities for forming military trains. In the same location, a warehouse of the Prydniprovska Railway was destroyed. In Kostiantynivka (DPR), according to reports, a FAB-3000 struck a drone warehouse of the 100th Separate Mechanized Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory included 25 fixed-wing drones overnight and an additional 125 during the day. Five drones were heading toward Moscow and were shot down, leading to restrictions at airports. However, unlike the strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure, no significant damage to industrial or military facilities on Russian territory was reported during this attack.
Meanwhile, yesterday in Florida, talks began in a “4 on 4” format between Ukraine — with the participation of Rustem Umerov, David Arakhamia, Kyrylo Budanov, and Serhiy Kyslytsya — and the United States, represented by Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner, Josh Gruenbaum, and senior State Department adviser Chris Carran. According to Witkoff, the discussions are focused on narrowing the range of unresolved issues. The negotiations continue today.
However, for Kyiv, the diplomatic track is complicated by factors far beyond the front lines. The escalation in the Persian Gulf and the potential prolongation of the war in Iran create existential economic risks for Ukraine.
The key danger lies in a possible reassessment of Europe’s position, which today is the main and essentially the only financial and military-economic donor of Ukraine. In the event of a protracted crisis in the Middle East, Europe will find itself in the most vulnerable position: rising prices for energy, fertilizers, and helium (the Gulf region being a major supplier) will hit European industry, which is already losing competitiveness.
This creates a strong incentive for Brussels to normalize relations with Moscow — one of the alternative suppliers of energy resources. Russia, facing a deficit in the global market, may not have difficulties with sales but will be able to use the energy lever for political pressure, setting conditions for a reconsideration of support for Kyiv.
For Ukraine, this means a triple blow: the risk of reduction or suspension of European funding programs, an increase in the cost of its own agricultural products (due to higher fuel and fertilizer prices), and a drop in export revenues from metallurgy, which is the first to react to a global recession. Under these circumstances, Kyiv’s previous military strategy, built on counting on Russia’s economic collapse with guaranteed unlimited Western support, is being called into question. Further prolongation of hostilities without considering the changing geopolitical situation carries the risk not only of worsening negotiation positions but also of losing the ability to sustainably finance its own defense capabilities.
