Hezbollah Fire Reaches Gaza Border As Israel Hit Bridges To Expand Operations In Lebanon (Videos)

Hezbollah on March 19 fired rockets toward southern Israel, setting off sirens in Ashkelon and several settlements near the border with the Gaza Strip.

The long-range rockets struck open areas, according to the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), and Hebrew media didn’t report any casualties.

The attack marked the first time Hezbollah has targeted the Gaza border area, located some 200 kilometers away from the Blue Line — a temporary line drawn by the United Nations that separates Israel and Lebanon. The group is known, however, to possess rockets and missiles that can reach practically everywhere in Israel.

During the day, Hezbollah also launched multiple salvos of rockets at northern Israel, with multiple impacts reported, including one in Kiryat Shmona.

The IDF, from its side, began expanding what it described as a “targeted” ground operation in southern Lebanon, the heartland of Hezbollah.

The military said that it struck two bridges on the Litani River, alleging that they were used by Hezbollah to move fighters and weapons into southern Lebanon. Litani lies 20 to 30 kilometers away from the Blue Line, and Israel has repeatedly implied that it wants to occupy all territories up to the river since Hezbollah renewed attacks after the outbreak of the war on Iran.

“The Hezbollah terrorist organization uses these crossings to transfer thousands of weapons, rockets and rocket launchers, which it uses to carry out terror attacks from the area south of the Litani [River] against IDF troops and Israeli civilians,” the military said in a statement.

The military added that the two bridges were targeted in order to “prevent harm to Israeli civilians as well as to Lebanese civilians.”

Separately, the IDF said that troops of the 300th “Baram” Regional Brigade recently demolished over 80 Hezbollah sites in southern Lebanon.

The military also announced that the commander of the Imam Hossein Division, an Iranian force which operates alongside Hezbollah, was killed in an Israeli strike in the Lebanese capital, Beirut, a day earlier. Hassan Ali Marwan was killed a week after the previous commander of the force was killed in an Israeli strike.

Al-Manar TV, affiliated with Hezbollah, also announced the death of its political programming director, Mohammad Sherri, and his wife, who were killed in an Israeli strike targeting a residential apartment in Beirut.

Israeli strikes in Lebanon have killed over 900 people and displaced more than a million since Hezbollah renewed its attacks on Israel, according to Lebanese health authorities, which noted that the fatalities include 111 children. Another 334 children were wounded.

The war in Lebanon is expected to go on even if a ceasefire was reached in Iran. Israel has set some ambitious goals like ending Hezbollah once and for all. The IDF will likely attempt to reach the Litani, and if the losses are manageable it could cross it and head further north.
