On January 16, the Russian military’s Vostok [East] Group of Forces made additional gains in three separate areas in Zaporozhye as the collapse of Kiev forces continued.
The 394th Motorized Rifle Regiment of the 127th Motorized Rifle Division, a part of the Vostok Group of Forces, captured Zhovtnevoye, also known as Olenokostiantynivka, on the Haichur River after a heated battle, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense.
“As a result of the offensive, the enemy’s area of defense of more than 6 square kilometers has been liberated,” the ministry said in a statement.
“During the battles, a large number of enemy manpower and hardware, as well as more than 15 Baba Yaga heavy hexacopters, were neutralized,” it added.
The ministry also noted that the capture of Zhovtnevoye “made it possible to gain a foothold on the west bank of the Haichur River, expand a bridgehead and create conditions for further advancement” in Zaporozhye.
With the settlement secured, most of the west bank of the Haichur is now under Russian control. Thus, Ukraine’s ability to launch counterattacks have been reduced.
Further south along the River, the Vostok Group of Forces expanded its control around Huliaipole, mainly to the south of the city.
Russian troops advanced to the west of the T-0401 highway for the first time, securing more than 8,2 square kilometers. This advance set the ground for a wider offensive to the west of the city. Kiev forces in Zaliznychne and Staroukrainka are already under pressure.
Meanwhile to the west in Zaporozhye, advance by the Vostok Group of Forces was reported in the direction of Stepnohirsk.
According to preliminary reports, Russian troops have captured half of Novoyakovlevka, located to the east of Stepnohirsk, after storming the settlement just a few days earlier. Kiev forces are attempting to hold on onto the settlement. However, they don’t appear to have the means to do so.
By advancing along the Haichur, near Huliaipole and in the direction of Stepnohirsk, the Russian military pressured Kiev forces in the key city of Orikhiv from the east and west. The battle of the city could take months to start, but will likely go down fast as the Russian side is far superior in terms of manpower and firepower. The Ukrainian collapse in Zaporozhye will not likely end any time soon.
