President Donald Trump said on January 3 that the United States is “going to run” Venezuela indefinitely after capturing the country’s president, Nicolás Maduro, in an early morning operation.
“We’re going to run the country until such time as we can do a safe, proper and judicious transition,” Trump told reporters during a press conference from his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida.
“We don’t want to be involved with having someone else get in, and we have the same situation that we had for the last long period of years. So we are going to run the country,” he added.
Trump stressed that the U.S. should take charge of Venezuela to ensure that the eventual next leader has the “good of the Venezuelan people” in mind. Nevertheless, he offered no timeline for how long such a transition of power was expected to take.
“We’re going to stay until such time as the proper transition can take place,” he said.
Praising the early morning operation in the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, Trump said that no American service members were killed and no U.S. military equipment was lost.
“If you would have seen what I saw last night, you would have been very impressed. I’m not sure that you’ll ever get to see it, but it was an incredible thing to see not a single American service member was killed and not a single piece of American equipment was lost,” he said.
“We had many helicopters, many planes, many, many people involved in that fight,” he added.
Trump also said that the U.S. was prepared to mount a second attack on Venezuela, but suggested it was no longer necessary after the capture of Maduro.
Earlier, Trump posted a photo of Maduro aboard the USS Iwo Jima amphibious assault ship after his capture to Truth Social.

Providing details on the capture of Maduro, Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Dan Caine revealed that more than 150 aircraft took off from 20 different bases on land and sea across the Western Hemisphere during the operation.
Among them were helicopters carrying an extraction force that began their flight into Caracas at just 100 feet above the water.
The helicopters, safeguarded by a series of strikes carried out in the area, arrived at Maduro’s compound in the early morning. The effort to capture Maduro and his wife required multiple “self defense engagements” as the forces came under fire, Caine said, before flying out of Venezuela.
“Failure of one component of this well-oiled machine would have endangered the entire mission, and failure is never an option for America’s joint force,” Caine said.
On the “day after” plan, Trump revealed that the U.S. is now working with Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodríguez. He told reporters that Rodríguez was sworn in as president, but noted that she was “picked by Maduro.”
Trump said Secretary of State Marco Rubio “just had a conversation with her, and she’s essentially willing to do what we think is necessary to make Venezuela great again.”
He added later that Rodríguez “had a long conversation with Marco, and she said, ‘We’ll do whatever you need.’ … I think she was quite gracious, but she really doesn’t have a choice.”
During the conference, Trump didn’t shy away from the issue of oil. He said that the U.S. will be “very strongly involved” in Venezuela’s oil industry. The country is reported to have the world’s largest oil reserves.
“We’re going to have our very large United States oil companies — the biggest anywhere in the world — go in, spend billions of dollars, fix the badly broken infrastructure, the oil infrastructure,” Trump said.
“Let’s start making money for the country,” he added.
According to Trump, U.S. oil companies will pay directly for the cost of rebuilding Venezuela’s crude infrastructure and the country will pay back later.
“They will be reimbursed for what they’re doing,” he said.
“We’re going to get the oil flowing the way it should be,” he added, noting that the U.S. will be “selling large amounts of oil to other countries, many of whom are using it now, but I would say many more will come.”
While the conference was closer to a declaration of victory, the situation in Caracas remains unclear, with all available information indicating that Maduro’s allies are very much still in power. What Trump said indicates that the U.S. reached, or about to reach an agreement with them.
As for Maduro, just before the conference the U.S. Department of Justice unsealed a new indictment against him, along with his wife and son.
The Justice Department alleged in the indictment that Maduro and his allies have turned Venezuelan institutions into a hotbed of drug trafficking-fueled corruption for their own benefit. This indicates that the Trump administration is not planning on releasing him any time soon.
