The Russian military’s elite Center for Advanced Unmanned Technologies “Rubicon” on December 29 revealed that it has been using a new type of long-range suicide drones to attack Ukrainian radars, aircraft and even ships.
A video released by the center shows four aerial radars, a P-19, a Pelikan, an ST-68U and a P-18, getting hit, along with a Zoopark-3 counter-battery radar, an An-2 aircraft, what appears to be a Mi-24 gunship helicopter, and two unidentified ships. Notably, the helicopter was hit some 236 kilometers away from the front.
Rubicon didn’t share much details, but the footage reveals that at least some of the strikes were carried out using a drone unveiled earlier this year.
The drone, which was designated by the Ukrainian intelligence as the “BM-35,” features an aerodynamic fuselage with a delta-shaped wing configuration, constructed from plywood and lightweight composites for stealth and maneuverability. It is propelled by a two-stroke petrol engine.
The range of the drone is reported to be well-over 200 kilometers, with extended loitering capabilities for prolonged surveillance before striking.
The drone, which reportedly coast around $50,000, is typically equipped with a targeting system built around an imager with real-time video streaming via radio link, allowing remote control.
It’s worth noting that the drone is usually confused with Italmas, a loitering munition with very similar characteristics that was developed by the ZALA Aero Group.
Rubicon’s latest strikes show that the center is not just improving its offensive capabilities by acquiring more capable drones, but also its ability to quickly gather accurate intelligence on high-value mobile targets, like radars, aircraft and ships.
The center could soon have the capabilities to restrict the movement of Kiev forces hundreds of kilometers away from the front.
Kiev is already deeply worried. This was clear last month when Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed symbolic sanctions targeting individuals and entities linked to Rubicon.
