Relentless Push To Sumy: Tracking Russia’s Northern Offensive

Recent field reports indicate growing Russian successes in Ukraine’s border Sumy region, though Ukrainian sources have been slow to acknowledge territorial changes, often delaying updates by several days. Russian forces are reportedly concentrating infantry across multiple sectors and pushing forward, with several strategically important villages now under threat of falling under Russian control.

Following the liberation of Kondratovka, Ukrainian troops are desperately trying to halt further Russian advances toward Khotin and Pisarivka. The surrounding forest areas are heavily occupied by Ukrainian forces, forcing Russian assault units to proceed cautiously. Before the mop up operations begin, Russian artillery and drone operators heavily pound enemy positions. Footage from the front confirms the destruction of another Ukrainian group and their pickup truck by drone operators of the 30th Motorized Rifle Brigade (44th Army Corps, Leningrad Military District).

Ukrainian sources attempt to downplay the dare situation, claiming that Russian forces have only made probing attacks into the strategically important stronghold of Yunakivka. However, reports from the battlefield confirm that the settlement is already partially under the control of Russia’s North grouping. Yunakivka, a key Ukrainian logistics hub in the area, has become a focal point of intense fighting as Russian troops press forward.

Ukrainian forces are deploying heavy Baba Yaga drones—often armed with anti-personnel or even anti-tank mines—under the cover of darkness to slow Russian advances. However, Russian FPV drone operators, supported by air defense, have been effective in intercepting and destroying these UAVs before they reach their targets. Recent footage shows three Ukrainian heavy drones being precisely struck by Russian loitering munitions.

Despite stiff resistance, Russian forces continue to push toward the regional capital, Sumy. Over the past day, Marines and airborne units completed the mop up operations in several more Ukrainian strongholds and are advancing through forested areas towards Sumy. Fighting remains fierce in Yunakivka and Yablonivka. On July 6, Ukrainian forces attempted a failed counterattack in Yunakivka, resulting in heavy losses before retreating southward. Additionally, a Ukrainian drone command post was destroyed in Yastrebine after being targeted by a precision strike from a Russian loitering munition.

Ukrainian volunteer reports confirm that the 158th Mechanized Brigade, previously believed to be disbanded due to manpower shortages, has been redeployed to Sumy region after training in Dnipropetrovsk. However, just days before their deployment, an Iskander missile strike on the Novomoskovsk training ground reportedly killed dozens of soldiers from this brigade.

In Yablonivka, Russian forces have reportedly eliminated several units from Ukraine’s 71st Separate Jaeger Brigade. Social media is increasingly filled with obituaries for killed Ukrainian soldiers and reports of missing personnel. Meanwhile, relatives of fallen soldiers from Ukraine’s 92nd Mechanized Brigade staged a protest in Kyiv, though it failed to gain significant attention.

Ukrainian sources now admit that Russian forces are within 20 km of Sumy, bringing the city within range of Russian FPV drone strikes. Over the past few days, Ukrainian channels have expressed growing alarm over the imminent threat of FPV drone attacks on Sumy, with some urging civilians to evacuate.

Ukrainian officials are calling for mass evacuations not only from northern Sumy region but from the city of Sumy itself, as Russian forces continue their advance. Strikes on the city have already increased in frequency, and with Russian drone operations expanding southward, Sumy is likely to face even heavier attacks in the near future.

Russians have repeatedly warned Ukrainian civilians to leave the area to avoid being used as human shields by Ukrainian forces—a tactic seen in Mariupol, Severodonetsk, and other contested cities. Given the escalating intensity of combat, civilians in Sumy and surrounding areas are advised to evacuate while possible, as major supply routes will likely become primary targets for Russian strikes, including glide bombs, missiles, and Shahed drones.
