The Houthis (Ansar Allah) in Yemen launched a hypersonic ballistic missile at Israel on May 2 afternoon, the second during the day.
The missile targeted a “vital” structure near the port city of Haifa, Houthi military spokesman Brigadier General Yahya Saree said in a statement, adding that “the missile successfully reached its target, thank God, and forced millions of settlers to flee to shelters.”
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed the launch from Yemen, saying in a statement that the missile was successfully intercepted.
Sirens sounded in Haifa and across northern Israel amid the attack. Video footage posted to social networks showed a trail of smoke over the city.
This was the second such attack by the Houthis during the day. The first attack, which took place in the morning, targeted Ramat David Air Base, according to the group. The IDF said that the missile was intercepted outside Israel’s territories, but damage from falling debris was reported at the settlement of Mishmar Ha’emek.
The latest missile attack on Israel coincided with a wave of United States strikes on the western Yemeni province of al-Hodeidah. The strikes targeted the oil port of Ras Isa, according to the Houthi-run Al-Masirah TV, which didn’t report any casualties.
The Houthis have launched more than 20 ballistic missiles and several suicide drones at Israel since March 18, when the IDF resumed its offensive in Gaza.
Three days earlier, the U.S. military resumed strikes on Yemen on orders from President Donald Trump, who said at the time that the large-scale operation was launched in response to the group’s renewed attacks on Israel-affiliated shipping in the Red Sea.
The British military joined the U.S. operation earlier this week. This made no difference as evident by the Houthis’ latest attacks.
