The Unknown War: The Battle for Moscow

The Unknown War is an American 20-part series that documents the World War II conflict between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union.

Today, SouthFront shares the second part of the series, titled “The Battle for Moscow.” This part explorers the Nazi attack on the Soviet capital, which began early in October of 1941.

It covers key events from Joseph Goebbels falsely announcing the fall of Moscow, to the preparations to defend the city, to the historic November 7 October Revolution Day celebration and the following counter-offensive by the Red Army.

This part of the series also highlights Zhukov’s efforts during the battle, the fierce resistance put up by Red Army cadets and the heavy losses Nazi forces sustained on their failed attempt to capture the Soviet capital.

By December, the Red Army had pushed Nazi forces some 125 kilometers away from Moscow. The battle would come to an end with a decisive Soviet victory in January of 1942.

the germans had already lost the chance to take the soviet union by the end of the fighting around smolensk in 1941. the usa was still doing its level best at that time to support the nazi war machine.

AM Hants

us continued to support the nazi war machine after the war. 1947, creation of the cia and the same year they created israel, and the first project was to rescue the nazi and bolshevik elite and provide exile in the us, south latin america and canada. weren’t the us and uk training bandera to cause problems for russia, around the same time?

the poof

and there wouldn’t be one k*ke left alive today. what a terrible situation that would be.

AM Hants

you do know that the usa were very supportive of germany, till the us declared war on japan and then germany declared war on the usa. the usa came to the party late and lost less than 500,000. russia sent adolf and his savages back to berlin and the soviet union lost 27 million, half of them were russian. us always arrives late, yet demands all the prizes.

USA & Israel are #1!

the west should’ve let hitler take russia…heheheh

Clyde

the whole point of the anglo-american hitler program was to make sure that germany and russia did not end up in a single economic bloc. thanks for derping.

AM Hants

what i find ironic, is the fact that the allies have replaced russia (whose actions erased the nazis) with germany. the west are fully supportive of ukrainian nazis and give germany ‘place of honour’ at their 8 may celebrations. if not for russia, germany would have won. is their any difference between nazi germany and bolshevik/nazi eu 2025?

AM Hants

he tried to, but the russians sorted him and his savages out. ironic, the west celebrates auschwitz, with the germans guest of honour and russia banned. the west mocks russia’s ‘9 may victory day’ whilst honouring the nazis in ukraine. you seriously cannot make it up.

Dunk

in the battle for moscow germany had a pincer movement facing moscow but what they didn’t realise was that russia withdrew its armies from eastern russia to fight for moscow . the germans had 130,000 soldiers suffering from frostbite but zhukov was given charge of the army instead of stalin and that too changed things.

i was blocked from posting more information on russia beating off the german advance on moscow i just don’t understand sf,s own strategy ?????

the poof

if you’re a bona fide commentator, you’re liable for censoring. trolls and d*pshits get a free pass.

Dunk

i can only come to the conclusion that you are correct and therefore sf is a website punchbag for the west ,if so there is no point in me posting here as its not a serious website. i have many original historical books written by historians of repute on russia pre revolution to the 1950,s .

Mr. Nobody

put the author’s names up. always good to have a reference.

Itsthejews

sf is a russsian propaganda/narrative outlet so they will naturally censor those critical of that narrative. its mainly articles that involve ukraine and the russian side they do it. its quite obvious.
other articles in the middle east dont have that censorship. some that invole syria did not allpw you to name the leader and the leader to the north

Itsthejews

yes japans dow against the united states and that the soviet union with drew those divisions to moscow pushed back the german advance. however moscow could have been taken in 1942. as the weather became better and heavy rail way artillery and cannons could have been shipped in.

but ah fired the commander in chief von brauchitsch and decided he was smarter going all in ob the caucasus

Itsthejews

that overextended the already streched german supply lines. and the fact they split up in 2 army groups and went into the caucasus instead of fortifying the northern flank as originally planned spelled disaster. the encirclement only happend in november at stalingrad a few months after ah fired chief of staff franz halder who was keeping the whole cross branch organized.

Clyde

the germans had no oil. they had to drive on the caucasus, and they failed.

Itsthejews

to lay siege to the main cities moscow and leningrad much less oil was needed also the logistics were shorter. ah went into the caucasus without the logistics build up and without destroying the red army both were preconditions to succeed and hold onto it. al railways went through moscow. murmansk and archangelensk are the main ports

Itsthejews

the original plan was to take moscow by encirclement and cut off leningrad. link up with the fins behind the ladoga lake. the divisions transfered from siberia changed the situation and pushed back the germans. however germany still had the oppertunity to push in 1942 near demjansk and rezhev closing the pocket then pushing through the volkov front linking up with the fins. and pushing for vorenezh making a moscow encirclement.

Itsthejews

but ah over ruled this and decided to move into the caucasus without beating the main armies thus freeing up 2 army groups.
and he used 2nd rate units from its allies to defend the flanks. he didnt let the logistics build up at rostov take place and also pulled away most mobile units from the moscow sector.

all of this gambled everything on the caucasus without the logistics to keep up with the advance.

Itsthejews

in the original plan the 2nd rate units were to be used for the sieges of moscow and leningrad were they would have been more effective in holding the line rather then against many t34s and stalins organs katushas comming their way at stalingrads flanks. while the main armies advanced in the caucasus after completing the enriclement. some units would also be used to siege murmansk and later archangelensk

then the northern aa line would have been reached. giving germany 2 ports circumventing the british naval blockade allowing trade for part of the year to asia and other countries.

with a late 1942 or early 1943 advance on the caucasus its logistics would have been far better.
railways repaired supplies fuel munition hoarded near rostov and vorenezh.

Itsthejews

3 army groups da shing for it plus a quick entry into the middle east. iran and iraq joning axis.

the over extension to stalingrad and the loss at stalingrad prevent it from happening. and the loss at kursk is what ultimately costed them the war. after kursk there was no power parity anymore. and the delay before the attack gave the defenders the respite they needed to gain the advantage. and follow that up with a quick dash in ukraine cutting crimea off

he went into the caucasus as he wanted full control over the oil fields it contained which was more of a priority to him than capturing moscow and in doing so weakened his own forces the commander disagreed with him and so was releaved of duty .sf labels this article ” unknown ” it certainly isn’t to me.

Dragon of Bosnia

isn’t that suspicious that ussr knew that japan won’t start that war aginst them? wasn’t it suspicious why the heck they would attack pearl harbour anyways? just asking.

Dunk

that may be so but at the time stalin thought of leaving moscow but didn’t but if your country is in a life and death situation wouldn’t you redirect some of your army to the more serious national emergency ? stalin was using war strategy but it was his commanders who urged him to do so .

Dunk

i am getting more intelligent answers here on sf than the usual nonsense that sf seems to like.

Itsthejews

they knew because japan was cut off from oil. starting a war with the ussr would further limit their abilith to obtain any. plus they probably knew japan had a south east asia contingency plan. they occupied indonesia and the oilfields in 1942 shortly after pesrl harbor gaining some independence from the us oil embargo on them.

AM Hants

wasn’t pearl harbour a false flag? us had avoided wwii, until then. then they declared war on japan, post pearl harbour. germany took offense at the us declaring war on their friends in japan, and so declared war on the us. that was when the us then decided to join in wwii. so who benefitted from pearl harbour, knowing that it would draw the us into the war?
