Kiev forces launched an attack against the Crimean Peninsula early on August 2 using American-made MGM-140 ATACMS tactical ballistic missiles.
Video footage posted to social networks showed the launch of at least six ATACMS. Ukrainian media reported that the missiles targeted a Russian S-400 long-range air defense system. Nevertheless, these claims were rejected by Russian media.
Initially, Mikhail Razvozhayev, Governor of Sevestapol, said on his Telegram channel that shrapnel from an intercepted ATACMS missile hit a nine-story building in the port city. The building was quickly evacuated and no casualties were reported.
The governor later confirmed that the missiles were all intercepted by Russian air defenses, revealing that the attack targeted a residential area where a children’s hospital is located. Photos released by the governor’s press service confirmed this.

He also noted that the Ukrainian attack came on Ilyin’s Day, one of the most significant Orthodox holidays, and the Day of the Russian Airborne Forces.
“Sevastopol survived the Great Patriotic War, and it will survive now. And the enemy’s attempts to attack a sleeping city are further confirmation that we are doing everything right,” Razvozhayev said. “The fascist vermin must be crushed.”
The Kiev regime intensified attacks on Crimea and other Russian regions in recent months in an attempt to make up for the recent defeats of its forces.
Last month, Kiev forces launched a number of ATACMS missiles at Sevastopol. Submunitions from the missiles’ cluster warheads hit a crowded beach, killing four civilians and injuring more than 150 others. Russia said that the United States was complicit in the bloody attack.
The Russian military has been responding to attacks on Crimea by launching group strikes against military infrastructure and related power facilities in Ukraine.
