The Houthis (Ansar Allah) in Yemen announced on May 3 that they will expand their operations against Israel-affiliated ships to include all commercial vessels transiting the Mediterranean Sea.
“We will attack all ships heading to or having links with Israel in the Mediterranean Sea as well as in any area within our reach,” Houthi military spokesman Brigade General Yahya Sarea said in a statement to thousands of people who gathered in Yemeni capital, Sanaa, to support the Palestinian Gaza Strip. “The implementation of this decision begins now.”
The spokesman also warned that if Israel launches a military operation in the city of Rafah in southern Gaza, where more than a million Palestinians are reportedly taking shelter, the Houthis will target all ships and companies that deal with Israeli ports and prevent “all ships of these companies” from passing through the Red Sea, the Arabian Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea, “regardless of their destinations.”
“We will not hesitate to persist in military escalation until Israel stops its war and lifts the blockade on the Gaza Strip,” Brig. Gen. Sarea added.
It’s unclear how the Houthis could attack ships in the Mediterranean Sea. The group, which is backed by Iran, possesses a large arsenal of missiles and drones. Nevertheless, none of its known weapons could reach the Mediterranean from Yemen.
The group could in theory launch attacks in the Mediterranean from Lebanon, Syria or even Iran. However, this will require coordination with its allies in the so-called Axis of Resistance there.
Since last November, the Houthis have carried out 156 attacks against vessels affiliated with Israel or owned by the U.S. and the United Kingdom in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean in response to the Israeli war on Gaza.
In addition, the group launched 111 drone and missile attacks against the southernmost Israeli city of Eilat and shot down three U.S. combat drones over Yemen.
In an attempt to deter the Houthis, the U.S. and the UK have carried out more than 450 strikes against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen since January. At least 40 people were killed and 35 others were wounded in these strikes. However, the group remains undeterred.
