Despite the recent decline in international interest and media coverage, the war in Syria is still far from being over. As of December 16, unrest continues throughout the country, heating up in more and more regions.
In the northwestern region of Greater Idlib, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and its allies are still attempting to enforce the ceasefire brokered by Russia and Turkey on 5 March 2020.
On December 14, five militants from an elite unit of the al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) were killed near the town of Maarbalit, in the southern countryside of Idlib, when the SAA targeted them with a Russian-made 2K25 Krasnopol laser-guided artillery round. The strike was a response to recent ceasefire violations by HTS and its allies.
The bad security situation is not, however, the only problem in Greater Idlib. The humanitarian situation in the region, which is ruled by HTS, is getting worse.
On December 14 and 15, activists in the region reported a bread crisis, caused mainly by the recent fall of the Turkish Lira and HTS’s monopoly over the region’s economy. Throughout the region, people waited in long line for hours in order to secure their daily share of bread. The crisis will not likely end soon.
Meanwhile, in the northeastern region, the US-led coalition is facing more security challenges and threats than ever before.
On December 14, SAA service members intercepted a US-led coalition patrol that attempted to pass through the village of Tell al-Dahab south of Qamishli in the northern countryside of al-Hasakah. The patrol was forced to retreat.
The incident came less than 24 hours after a rocket attack was reported on one of the US-led coalition’s main positions in al-Omar oil fields in the southeastern Deir Ezzor countryside.
In the central region, military efforts to end ISIS insurgency continue, especially in the government-held part of Deir Ezzor. The terrorist group carried out several deadly attacks in the governorate’s western and northern countryside in the last few weeks.
On December 15, warplanes of the Russian Aerospace Forces carried out a series of airstrikes on ISIS hideouts in Deir Ezzor’s western desert. More Russian airstrikes will likely target the terrorist group’s remnants in the region in the upcoming few days.
Meanwhile, in the southern region, the security situation is not improving. Assassinations are still taking place in Daraa on a regular basis.
On December 15, unidentified gunmen attacked the house of Anwar Abu al-Sel in the town of Nawa in Daraa’s western countryside. Abu al-Sel used to command a group of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) known as “Ahrar Nawa”. He reportedly survived the assassination attempt.
On the same day, Rafaat Kamal al-Subaihi was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in front of his house in the town of Athman in the northern Daraa countryside. Al-Subaihi was a fighter in another FSA group known as “Alwiat Saif al-Sham”. However, he began working for the Syrian Military Intelligence Directorate after joining the 2018 reconciliation process in Daraa.
Another headache for Syrian military in the southern regions are regular attacks by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF).
On the night of December 16, Israeli aircraft from the Golan Heights struck targets in southern Syria. The SAA air defense units tried to repel the air attack and launched anti-aircraft missiles. However, the efforts did not prevent casualties and material damage. At least one Syrian serviceman was reportedly killed.
The situation in Daraa, and the rest of Syria will not likely improve anytime soon. The country appears to be locked in a cycle of violence. The illegal military presence of Turkey and the US, and the growing influence of HTS, ISIS and other terrorist groups are among the main reasons that are keeping the Syrian war going.
If you want peace then first base your intelligence on real developments, if you don’t then the fantasy you live in will eventually destroy you.
I was born Jesus Christ and spoke from the cradle, Freemason jew maggots took control of my heritage and capacities through the homosexual Sid Loder, anyhow it was all a part of God’s (swt) plan to trap evil.
Overcoming evil will become apparent with my emancipation.
Furthermore when that happens I will bring peace to Syria and the Middle East, mainly and in parricular Yemen.
