On November 22, Syrian opposition activists released a video showing a Russian Su-34 warplane dropping a precision-guided bomb on a terrorist hideout near the town of Sarjah in the southern Idlib countryside.
The bomb, which was loaded under the warplane’s right wing, was most likely a KAB–1500LG. The Russian Aerospace Forces has been arming its Su-34 warplanes in Syria with this type of bombs since the beginning of their operations in the country in 2015.
The KAB-1500LG is equipped with an advanced gimballed gyro stabilized semi-active laser homing seeker. The bomb has a circular error probable (CEP) of 4 to 7 meters only.
The bombs is available in the following three configurations:
- B-1500LG-Pr-E – Penetrating bunker buster with sub-caliber warhead;
- KAB-1500LG-F-E – Blast fragmentation warhead;
- KAB-1500LG-OD-E – thermobaric warhead.
Despite its heavy weight, which is close to 1,500 kg, the KAB-1500LG can be dropped 8 km away from its designed target.
By using such advanced munitions, the Russian Aerospace Forces can hit terrorists’ positions with pinpoint accuracy while minimizing the risk to nearby civilians.
