Zero Ships: The Week Russia Closed The Black Sea

On July 26, the bulker GOLDEN LEO rolled over and sank in Odessa Bay, a week after cruise missiles caught it leaving port. By then Ukrainian harbors stood empty – not one arriving vessel, as Zelensky admitted himself. Since 2022 Moscow had hit cranes and warehouses and left the ships alone. That stopped in July, and Ukraine’s sea trade collapsed before the month was out.

What Was In The Holds

The strike came on July 19 as the mini-bulker cleared Odessa. One of three missiles detonated at the starboard superstructure and gutted the accommodation block. Eighteen men were aboard, Syrian and Indian nationals plus a Ukrainian pilot. Eight were rescued, ten died.

Moscow’s grounds were on the record the same day. The Defense Ministry reported striking vessels “carrying military cargo” in the interests of the AFU in the waters off Odessa, including ships “from which Ukrainian forces launched strike drones and unmanned surface boats”. On the Russian account GOLDEN LEO’s holds carried ammunition of various calibers and mines beneath the grain.

This was not an isolated call. On July 18 the same ministry reported hitting vessels delivering AFU cargo into Chernomorsk; on July 15 and 16, strikes destroyed drone assembly shops inside the Odessa port perimeter, including the UJ-22 line run by UKRJET.

That is the operational picture: a port complex that builds attack drones, launches naval drones from merchant decks, and moves ordnance under agricultural manifests. In such a port, a hull is not a category of protection. It is a delivery method.

Then came the part nobody scripted. The burned ship floated for seven days with cargo still aboard before losing stability and capsizing in 22 meters of water. A slow, filmable death – the worst possible advertisement for the Odessa corridor.

One more AFU supply run ends on the seabed off Odessa. Two can play this game

Same Flag, Opposite Verdict

The West spent a year dismantling the idea that a flag protects a ship. Under Article 110 of UNCLOS, a vessel with a suspect registry is treated as having no nationality at all, and since March 2026 Operation IRINI has used that clause to stop and board. Britain put Royal Marines on the tanker Smyrtos in the Channel in June. France boarded the Benin-flagged Boracay in the Atlantic, found no contraband whatsoever, and charged the master only with refusing to obey.

Kiev applied the same logic in its own harbor. In December 2025 the SBU seized an African-flagged cargo ship in Odessa port, crewed by 16 Middle Eastern sailors, called it “shadow fleet” over earlier calls at Crimean ports, and handed the hull to the state asset agency to be sold.

In Odessa, the Ukrainian SBU seized a vessel sailing under the flag of an African state. The arrest was justified by claims that the ship had repeatedly called at the port of Sevastopol

So when GOLDEN LEO’s Guinea-Bissau flag is waved as proof of an illegitimate strike, the argument arrives seven months too late. The people waving it spent that year proving such a flag guarantees nothing at all.

Eleven Days That Closed A Sea

Day one was the night of July 11: long-range weapons hit Chernomorsk, Yuzhny and Izmail, and the next night Odessa lost the Odtrans logistics center, fuel tanks, two dry cargo ships, a ferry and a patrol boat. Between July 11 and 17 the Defense Ministry logged 19 group strikes on four ports and 24 vessels hit – 14 dry cargo ships, three ferries, two container ships, a tanker, a mooring vessel, a floating dock and two boats. By July 21 the strikes had moved out to sea, catching bulkers 9, 51 and 71 kilometers from Odessa.

Day eleven was July 22. Maersk suspended its Ukrainian service and rerouted boxes to Constanta, Hapag-Lloyd followed, and at the peak of harvest inbound traffic hit zero. Kiev’s agriculture minister stressed the state had restricted nothing – the shipowners simply stopped coming.

None of this was invented in Moscow. Kiev wrote the playbook first, and further from home. Sea Baby drone boats set the Gambia-flagged Kairos and Virat ablaze inside Turkey’s exclusive economic zone with 45 seafarers aboard.

November 2025: Kiev claims the Black Sea tanker strikes. Ukrainian special services released their own footage of the attack on the Gambia-flagged Kairos and Virat. Both vessels were running empty toward Novorossiysk when Sea Baby naval drones reached them

Ukrainian hexacopters also struck the Oman-flagged QENDIL 2,000 kilometers away in the Mediterranean. Nobody asked about flags then.

The QENDIL aground on the Turkish coast. Struck by Ukrainian drones in the Mediterranean, the tanker lost the ability to steer and ended up on the rocks – in the waters of a NATO member that had nothing to do with the war

The Bottom Line

The contrast is the whole story. For four years Russia struck cranes, berths, silos and fuel tanks, and the ships kept coming: infrastructure gets repaired, and a shipowner insures against damage ashore. In July the targeting shifted to the ships themselves, and eleven days later inbound traffic was zero. Nobody insures against being sunk at sea.

Resolutions are written in ink; hazards are marked on charts. GOLDEN LEO lies in 22 meters of water in Odessa Bay – a wreck symbol that will outlive every statement made about it. Masters will steer around it and underwriters will price it, and neither will wait for a court to decide who was right.
