As Ukrainians are risking their lives attempting to flee forced conscription, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and those around him in Kiev appear to be enjoying the wealth they gained from prolonging the conflict with Russia.
A video that first emerged online around September 18 revealed that Zelenskyy’s wife, Olena Zelenska, had recently spent over a whopping one million euros on a single outfit.
In the video, a French stylist who recently worked for Olena provides details on the outfit, describing it as the “most expensive look” of her career and calling the Ukrainian first lady a “very demanding woman”. The video, which turned into a scandal, was clearly produced by the stylist to promote her services.
“I was lucky to work online for the first time, and it was not just any client, it was the first lady of Ukraine. Can you imagine, it was Olena Zelenska,” the stylist says in the videos.
“But I have to tell you, this was the most expensive look of my entire career. It cost us over one million euros,” she added, noting that Olena “is a very demanding woman” and that it “wasn’t easy to find something to her taste.”
The stylist goes on to detail the outfit, which included a Christian Dior dress designed by world-renowned John Galliano in 1998 for 153,000€, a Himalaya Birkin bag, made by Hermès with crocodile leather and diamonds, at a cost of 450,000€, a Serpent Viper necklace, and the bracelet from the same collection, each worth 175,000€, and Eternal Diamond Stilettos shoes with a price tag of 150,000€.
Explaining how the pricy items were delivered to Olena, the stylist said that she simply handed them over to a Ukrainian official who visited France last September along with Zelenskyy.
“I met with representatives from their [Ukranian] delegation. I handed over all these items – this beautiful capsule – to that person, and they paid for my services, and they paid for all the items, of course,” she said.
Even if Olena bought the outfit with Zelensky’s own money, which is very doubtful, it is completely insane that the first lady of a country engaged in a conflict would spend this much on luxury items while her husband is sending troops en masse to get killed on the front.
Of course, this was not the only scandal to hit the Kiev region over the past week. A separate report from Ukraine’s Anti-Corruption Centre (AntAC) revealed that the family of National Security and Defense Council Secretary Rustem Umerov holds eight real estate properties in the United States.
According to the report, the assets include three apartments in the city Florida, four villas near Miami, as well as one apartment in New York.
AntAC said that the information was verified using open and paid databases, as well as sources in the U.S. with access to property records. The center did not, however, disclose exact addresses or apartment numbers and removed links to property listings showing prices, photos and rental conditions, citing security reasons
In his 2024 asset declaration, Umerov acknowledged that his wife Leila and their three children were living in the U.S, but claimed that they were renting a 137-square-metre apartment in Florida.
Umerov, originally from Uzbekistan, was appointed head of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council in July this year.

While Zelenskyy and those around him in Kiev are clearly enjoying the wealth they accumulated during the conflict and demand more money from the West, the reality of ordinary Ukrainians never been more oblique.
Hundreds of troops are getting killed or mutilated on the fronts every single day. Away from the front, many suffer as they look for their sons who went “missing in action,” with reports suggesting that Kiev was not cooperating with Russia on the retrieval of bodies in order to avoid paying a compensation to their families.
Those who managed to dodge recruitment are trying to flee the country in any means necessary, even risking their own lives in some cases.
These two realities in Ukraine are deemed to clash if the conflict drags on. The outcome won’t be in favor of the regime, however.
