The Houthis (Ansar Allah) in Yemen announced on April 10 that they had targeted four vessels, including what they described as a United States warship, with drones and naval missiles in the Gulf of Aden in support of the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and as a response to recent American-British strikes on Yemen.
In a statement, Houthi military spokesman, Brigade General Yahya Sarea, said that the group attacked the “MSC Darwin ship, MSC GINA, MV Yorktown” along with the U.S. warship using “suitable naval missiles and drones”.
“The Yemeni armed forces continue to perform their religious, moral and humanitarian duty towards the oppressed Palestinian people and in defense of dear Yemen, and their operations in the Red and Arab seas as well as in the Indian Ocean will continue until the aggression stops and the siege on the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip is lifted,” the spokesman said.
The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement that its forces destroyed an inbound anti-ship ballistic missile over the Gulf of Aden that was launched by Houthis and likely targeting the MV Yorktown on April 9.
There were no injuries or damage reported to U.S., coalition, or commercial ships in that incident, the command added.
In another statement released on April 11, the command announced that its forces shot down two Houthi drones over the Red Sea and destroyed eight others in areas controlled by the group in Yemen in “self-defense” strikes a day earlier.
“It was determined the UAVs presented an imminent threat to U.S., coalition, and merchant vessels in the region,” CENTCOM said. “These actions are taken to protect freedom of navigation and make international waters safer and more secure for U.S, coalition, and merchant vessels.”
The Houthis, who are backed by Iran, have attacked dozens of vessels affiliated with Israel or owned by the U.S. and the United Kingdom in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden since last November in response to the Israeli war and siege on Gaza.
Since January, the U.S. and the UK have carried out hundreds of strikes against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen in an attempt to deter the group. At least 37 people were killed in these strikes. However, the Houthis responded by expanding their operations to include the Indian Ocean.

consider the relative costs of both sides. the us must deploy a hugely expensive naval and air operation far from home base, while the houthis launch inexpensive missiles and drones from their own back yard.
