The Houthis (Ansar Allah) in Yemen announced on August 31 that they had attacked the Liberian-flagged merchant vessel Groton in the Gulf of Aden in response to the Israeli war on the Palestinian enclave of the Gaza Strip.

Houthi military spokesman Brigade General Yahya Sarea said in a statement that the vessel was targeted because its owners violated a decision by the group banning entry to ports in “occupied Palestine.”

“The operation was carried out by the naval, drone, and the missile forces … This is the second targeting of the ship since it was previously targeted on August 3,” he added.

The spokesman went on to assert that the Houthis had “succeeded in preventing Israeli navigation in the Red Sea, as well as in imposing a ban on navigation in the declared area of operations on all ships linked to the Israeli enemy or dealing with it, regardless of their destination, or ships belonging to companies related to this enemy.”

“The Yemeni Armed Forces confirm the continuation of its naval operations in its area of operations, as well as the continuation of its support for the valiant Palestinian resistance in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank until the aggression stops and the siege on the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip is lifted,” he concluded.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations, a detachment of the Royal Navy, reported on August 30 it had received a report of an attack on a vessel 130 nautical miles east of Yemen’s southern port city of Aden. It said two missiles exploded near the vessel, and all crew members were safe and proceeding to the next port of call. The vessel in question was most likely the Groton.

Since November, the Houthis, who are backed by Iran, have attacked dozens of vessels affiliated with Israel or owned by the United States and the UK in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea in response to the war on Gaza.

The group also launched dozens of drones and missiles at Israel and shot down six American-made combat drones over Yemen and nearby waters.

The U.S. and the UK have carried out hundreds of strikes against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen since January in an attempt to deter the group. Israel also launched an attack against al-Hodeidah last month after a deadly drone strike on the city of Tel Aviv, but to no avail.
