Iran is preparing to deliver the launchers for short-range ballistic missiles that the United States claimed Tehran shipped to Russia last year for use against Ukraine, Reuters reported on 10.
The missiles in question are from the Fath-360 type, which is guided by a satellite-aided Inertial navigation system and has a range of up to 120 kilometers.
Two Western security officials and a regional official told the news agency the delivery of the Fath-360 launchers was imminent, without elaborating.
Last September, the U.S. said that Iran delivered hundreds of ballistic missiles to Russia on nine Russian-flagged ships. The ships were sanctioned by Washington at the time. Later, Reuters reported, citing three Western officials, that the launchers were not included.
Iran’s permanent mission to the United Nations categorically rejected the accusations in Reuters’ report, calling them “utterly absurd.”
“We regret that Reuters persists in its habit of circulating baseless allegations against the Islamic Republic of Iran,” it said in a statement.
“So long as conflict persists between the parties, Iran will abstain from rendering any form of military assistance to either side,” it added.
Reuters’ latest report mirrors many Western media reports from the last few years. In all cases, no evidence confirming that Iran has delivered ballistic missiles to Russia was presented.
The report came as European leaders threatened Russia with more sanctions if it does not accept a temporary unconditional ceasefire that would allow them to rearm Ukraine. Moscow rejected the proposal, offering Kiev the chance to engage in unconditional direct talks.
Interestingly, the report also coincided with another from The New York Time revealing that the U.S. had approved the transfer of 125 long-range artillery rockets for the M142 HIMARS system and 100 MIM-104 Patriot air defense missiles from Germany to Ukraine.
