An Iranian drone attack caused material damage to a water desalination plant in Bahrain, the country’s Interior Ministry announced on March 8.
“Iranian aggression indiscriminately attacked civilian targets and caused material damage to a water desalination plant following a drone attack,” the ministry said in a statement, without providing any additional details.
From its side, the country’s Electricity and Water Authority said in a statement that “there was no impact on water supplies or the power grid as a result of the Iranian attack.”
In a separate Iranian attack, three people were injured when fragments of an Iranian missile hit a university building in northern Bahrain, according to the Interior Ministry.
The ministry also announced that a strike hit a facility near Salman port causing a fire. The United States Naval Support Activity base, which is the primary headquarters for the Navy’s 5th Fleet and the Naval Forces Central Command, is located there.
A video posted online also showed what appears to be an Iranian drone hitting Crowne Plaza Manama in the capital. American troops are reported to be based there.
Iran has launched hundreds of missiles and drones at neighboring countries, especially in the Gulf, over the past week in response to the war sparked by the U.S. and Israel. The attacks targeted military facilities hosting or supporting the American military, in addition to energy facilities and infrastructure.
Just a day earlier, Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi accused the United States earlier in the day of attacking a freshwater desalination plant on Qeshm Island.
“The U.S. committed a blatant and desperate crime by attacking a freshwater desalination plant on Qeshm Island. Water supply in 30 villages has been impacted,” he wrote on X
Araghchi warned that “attacking Iran’s infrastructure is a dangerous move with grave consequences. The U.S. set this precedent, not Iran.”
The majority of Gulf countries largely depend on desalinated water for their inhabitants’ consumption. About 60 percent of Bahrain’s drinking water comes from desalination plants, which stands at 90 percent for Kuwait, 86 percent in Oman, 70 percent in Saudi Arabia, and 42 percent in the United Arab Emirates.
The attack on the water desalination plant in Bahrain was likely a response to the attack on Qeshm Island, but Iran is yet to officially claim responsibility.
Any further attacks on Iranian infrastructure could trigger a stronger response from the Islamic Republic, which has the ability to target all water desalination plants in neighboring countries. Such an escalation would certainly spark an unprecedented water crisis.
