A wave of Israeli strikes hit the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, which is held by the Houthis (Ansar Allah), on September 25, causing casualties and destruction.
As the attack was taking place, Defense Minister Israel Katz lauded what he called “powerful” strikes against targets of the Houthis in Sanaa.
“The IDF (Israeli Defense Forces) struck several military camps, including a camp of the Houthi general staff, eliminated many dozens of Houthi terror operatives, and destroyed stockpiles of UAVs and weaponry,” the minister said in a statement.
Later, the IDF said in a statement that the strikes, carried out by the Israeli Air Force (IAF), hit targets belonging to the Houthis’ “security and intelligence apparatus” and army, including a headquarters of the group’s’ general staff; compounds belonging to security and intelligence apparatus; the headquarters of the group’s “propaganda department”; and other military camps where weapons were stored and operatives were gathered.
Some 20 IAF fighter jets dropped more than 65 munitions on seven targets during the attack, which the IDF said included aerial refueling.
Footage from Sanaa showed large blasts within the city itself, with the Houthi-run Health Ministry later reporting that the Israeli strikes killed two people and wounded more than 48 others.
The IDF attack was clearly meant as a response to two Houthi drone strikes that hit the southern Israeli port city of Eilat on September 19 and 24. The second attack left more than 20 people wounded, including two who were reported to be in a serious condition.
In recent weeks, Israel escalated its attacks on Yemen in a fresh bid to deter the Houthis, killing Ahmed al-Rahawi, prime minister of the government led by the group, along with other ministers in strikes on Sanaa late in August, then killing over 30 journalists working in outlets affiliated with the group and devastating the port of al-Hodeida in the west of the country in two separate waves of strikes early in September.
Israeli attacks so far had no effect on the Houthis. Since March 18, when the IDF resumed its offensive against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, the group has launched nearly 90 ballistic missiles and at least 40 drones at Israel.
Katz recently vowed to send Abdel-Malik al-Houthi, the leader of the group, to the “depths of hell” and that his group would lose its hold on Sanaa.
While Israel is clearly determined to go after the Houthis, its capabilities in this regard remain limited due to the fact that Yemen is located around 2,000 kilometers away. Meanwhile, Houthi attacks on the country appear to be getting more accurate by the week.
