Preliminary reports indicate Russian troops have secured control over the border settlement of Loknya in Sumy region, marking a significant advance in the northern sector of the Ukrainian front. Units from the Russian Sever Group of Forces are now pushing toward Yunakovka, just 200 meters beyond Loknya, while intense fighting continues in nearby Belovody.
While, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation is yet to officially confirm control of Loknya, both Russian and Ukrainian military observers report Russian advance in the settlement. Russian gains in Loknya follow weeks of heavy clashes where Ukrainian forces had utilized the village as a drone operations hub in an attempt to disrupt Russian advances in the border areas in the Sumy region and neighboring Kursk region. Russian airborne troops overcame fierce resistance, with Ukrainian artillery and drone teams attempting unsuccessfully to halt the offensive.
Nearby, Russia’s reconnaissance units have made gains around Vodolagy and Oleshnya.
Missile strike of Iskander missile at the military training center of the AFU in the area of Shostka, Sumy region. As a result of the strike, Ukrainian losses reportedly amounted to 70 servicemen, including 20 military instructors. An ammunition depot and up to 10 vehicles were also destroyed:
The Russian army is expanding the security zone near its border in the Sumy region, while the Armed Forces of Ukraine continue bloody attempts to break through Russian defense near Tyotkino in the Kursk region. The situation appears increasingly dire for Ukrainian forces in the region.
Relatives of servicemen from Ukraine’s 78th Air Assault Regiment report an entire unit went missing near Basovka in early May. This elite formation, originally trained by military intelligence (GUR) for naval raids on Crimea, was allegedly destroyed in Sumy’s trenches before ever reaching its intended targets.
Ukrainian social media channels reveal growing panic among military families, with multiple posts confirming the destruction of a border guard detachment from Chop transferred to reinforce Belovody, an entire company from Ukraine’s 225th Assault Battalion near Iskrikovshchina.
The paratroopers of the Russian 83rd Airborne Infantry Division crept up to the Swedish CV90 infantry fighting vehicle, eliminated the Ukrainian crew, boarded the vehicle and returned to their positions with the trophy:
The fall of Loknya threatens to provoke further fall of Ukrainian defensive lines deep in the Sumy border region. With Russian forces now operating beyond the initial contact line, reports suggest Ukrainian units are experiencing systemic breakdowns in command and control. The disappearance of whole units points to either mass desertions or catastrophic battlefield losses, a troubling development as Moscow’s northern grouping continues its methodical advance deeper into Ukrainian territory.
