US Soldier Killed in Anti-Taliban Mission in Afghanistan

A US soldier was killed in Afghanistan’s Helmand province on August 23 after his patrol triggered a roadside bomb. The explsion also wounded another American and six Afghan soldiers.

The NATO-led mission in Afghanistan said in a statement that US and Afghan troops came under attack near the province’s capital of Lashkar Gar.

“On behalf of all of U.S. Forces – Afghanistan, as well as Resolute Support, our deepest sympathies go out to the families and friends of those involved,” General John W. Nicholson, commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan said in a statement.

In recent weeks, Helmand province has been a battleground for intense fighting between Afghan troops, supported by NATO, and Taliban forces that have used the summer months to launch multiple offensives across the country. Taliban is in control of over 50 percent of Helmand and preparing to sieze the provincial capital.

On August 22, 100 US troops arrived to Lashkar Gar to support Afghan police in the area.
