On September 16, a US-led coalition aerostat was spotted over the northern countryside of al-Hasakah in Syria’s northeastern region.
The Syrian state TV said that the coalition launched the aerostat from its base in the town of Tell Beydar, which oversees several key roads leading to al-Hasakah city, the town of Tell Tamer and to the town of al-Qamishli, which is located right on the border with Turkey.
The aerostat, which was identified as the Silicis Technologies’ DURUS Tactical Aerostat, can carry out several missions, including ISR&T [Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance and Targeting], electronic warfare, communications relay as well as C-sUAS [Counter small Unmanned Aerial Systems].
The DURUS can stay in the air for 21 continuous days. It has a top altitude of 274 meters and an air-to-ground communication range of up to 72 kilometers.
In March, the US-led coalition launched a similar tactical aerostat from its base in the Conoco gas plant in the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor.
The coalition is not using these aerial long-endurance surveillance systems to spy on ISIS only, but also to keep an eye on Syrian government forces and their allies who are present in the territory of its proxy, the Syrian Democratic Forces.
The aerostat launched from Conoco was apparently used to monitor Iranian-backed forces who are present in several towns near the base. The one that was deploy in Tell Beydar will likely monitor Syrian and Russian troops moving between al-Hasakah city, Tell Tamer and al-Qamishli, where a Russian base is located.
It’s worth noting that the US-led coalition has been working to expand its presence in northeastern Syria and enforce its bases in the region since the start of the year.
