US Launches Air Strikes on ISIS Stronghold of Sirte in Libya

Tthe US military has begun conducting air raids against ISIS targets at the Libyan city of Sirte Sirte is a major ISIS stronghold in the African country.

The intervention was made by the request of the so-called “Libya’s unity government.”

“The presidency council, as the general army commander, has made a request for direct US support to carry out specific airstrikes,” Fayez Serraj, the head of the Libyan presidency council, said in a statement on August 1.

The first strikes of US warplanes were reported the same day.

The Military Times reported, citing Pentagon sources, that this is expected to be a multi-day operation.

The air strikes were personally authorized by US President Barack Obama after consultations with Defense Secretary Ash Carter and senior military commanders.

Where do they come from? No aircraft carriers in the area. Europe?
