The Dwight D. Eisenhower carrier strike group with embarked Carrier Air Wing 3 began its first mission in support of the US-led coalition operations against ISIS from the Persian Gulf, the US Navy said in a press release on July 22.

“The efforts of the ‘Ike-Battle Axe’ team have and will continue to be instrumental in the fight against ISIL [Islamic State],” the Carrier Air Wing 3 commander, captain Jeffrey Anderson noted.

One hundred sixteen sorties from the Eastern Mediterranean Sea in support of coalition operations were made by Carrier Air Wing 3 between June 28 and July 8, the press release stated. The strike group moved from the Eastern Mediterranean to the edge of the Arabian Peninsula on July 12.

The Eisenhower strike group was formed for supporting of Operation Inherent Resolve, maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the US 5th Fleet area of operations.

Airstrikes against ISIS in Syria and Iraq have been carrying out by the US-led coalition of more than 60 states since the summer of 2014.
