The US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) carried out a new security operation in the northern city of Raqqa in the early hours of March 31, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).
The UK-based monitoring group said that nine operatives of the terrorist group were arrested during the operation. The operatives are suspected of planning and conducting several attacks against US-backed forces.
On October 17 of 2017, the SDF imposed control of Raqqa after reaching a deal with ISIS fighters, who were allowed to withdraw with their heavy weapons to southern Deir Ezzor. The agreement came after four months of fierce clashes inside the city, which was completely destroyed by US-led coalition bombing.
Like in all other areas, which were captured by the SDF, ISIS managed to keep several sleeper cells in Raqqa and its countryside. A recent report by the SOHR revealed that more than 268 SDF fighters and civilians were killed by the terrorist group’s cells in northeastern Syria since last August.
Earlier this year, the SDF’s security forces installed more than 600 surveillance cameras inside the city center of Raqqa in an attempt to counter the threat of ISIS cells. However, a series of recent attacks prove that these measures are still not enough.
