A member of the U.N. Commission of Inquiry on Syria, Carla Del Ponte, on Monday backed Russia’s airstrikes on “terrorist groups” in the war-torn country.
“Overall, I think the Russian intervention is a good thing, because finally someone is attacking these terrorist groups,” Del Ponte told Swiss public broadcaster RTS, listing ISIS and Nusra among the groups targeted.
Del Ponte, added that the Russians apparently “are not distinguishing enough between the terrorists and others, and that is not as good.”
Her comments came amid international dispute over the Russian airstrikes.
Carla Del Ponte is a former Chief Prosecutor of two United Nations international criminal law tribunals. A former Swiss attorney general, who is currently probing rights abuses in Syria.
