Ukrainian Soldiers Who Committed Crimes In Russia’s Kursk Region Face Justice

Russian investigators are recording and investigating numerous crimes committed by Ukrainian units during the illegal invasion of the Kursk region of Russia.

Thus, in late January 2025, investigators established the involvement of five Ukrainian servicemen from the 92nd separate assault brigade in the murder of 22 civilians in the village of Russkoye Porechnoye in Kursk Region. The militants confessed that from September 28 to November 24, 2024, they killed 11 men and three women there. In addition, they raped and committed violent acts of a sexual nature against eight women, whom they also later killed.

Russia’s Investigative Committee has opened 175 criminal cases against 290 captured AFU fighters for crimes in the Kursk region.

“175 criminal cases have been opened against 290 captured AFU soldiers, of which 41 cases against 98 individuals have already been considered by the court,” the Investigative Committee’s Telegram channel said.

According to the agency, since the beginning of the AFU invasion of the region in August 2024, 191 civilians of Kursk region became victims of Kiev’s aggression, another 372 people were injured, including 17 minors. More than 49 thousand residents of the region were also recognized as victims in criminal cases.

According to the convictions, the Ukrainian prisoners of war are accused of:

• Illegal crossing of the state border;
• Shelling civilians and infrastructure;
• Intimidation of civilians;
• Mining roads;
• Obstructing the evacuation of civilians;
• Illegal occupation of private houses, etc.

Thus, the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation has collected evidence recognized by the court as sufficient to pass a sentence on servicemen of the 225th separate assault brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) Artem Mironenko, Sergey Kozub, Vladimir Dobizha and Oleg Patabenko. They were found guilty of committing terrorist acts in Kursk.

The investigation and the court found that in August 2024, all four Ukrainian servicemen with RPK-74 and AK-74 weapons on a Bradley infantry fighting vehicle illegally entered the territory of the Russian Federation.

“While in the Sudzhansky, Korenevsky and Glushkovsky districts of the Kursk region, they threatened local residents with weapons, illegally occupied private residential houses, prevented the evacuation of civilians, and repeatedly opened fire on Russian servicemen and civilians”.

The investigative agency published a video from the courtroom. All the defendants confessed to terrorism.

Also charged with committing a terrorist act are servicemen of the 17 separate tank brigade of the AFU: Drebeda Igor, Kraivanov Yevgeny, Shevchenko Nikolai, Zolotarev Ivan and Vaskovsky Maxim.

“In August 2024, Drebeda, Kraivanov and Shevchenko in Korenevsky district of Kursk region systematically shelled residential houses of Olgovka village, where there were civilians. As a result of the said criminal actions, at least four civilians were killed and civilian infrastructure was significantly damaged.”

“On the night of August 31, 2024, Zolotarev on a truck as part of a platoon armed with combat automatic small arms and large-caliber weapons and explosive devices, in order to carry out terrorist activities crossed the State border of the Russian Federation and entered the territory of Sudyha district of Kursk region, after which he proceeded towards the village of Tolstiy Lug. In the village, the militants set up an observation and firing position in the basement of a private house. They monitored the area, transmitted information about the movement of Russian military units and intimidated civilians. On September 4, 2024, they were joined by Vaskovsky and his fellow soldiers, who arrived to reinforce the grouping of forces and means. Two days later, a group of five militants, including Zolotarev and Vaskovsky, reached the village of Vishnevka, Korenevsky district, where they continued similar terrorist activities until they were detained by Russian servicemen”.

Servicemen from the 61st separate mechanized brigade of the AFU Melnyk Svyatoslav and Kharsun Sergey were sentenced to 15 years in a strict regime colony.

“In August 2024, Kharsun, Melnyk, being in the settlements of Sudzha and Cherkasskaya Konopelka Sujan district of the Kursk region, took combat positions in hospitals and residential houses. From there they repeatedly opened fire on Russian servicemen and civilians. In addition, by threatening to use weapons, they intimidated the local population and prevented their evacuation”

Soldiers of 41 mechanized brigade of the AFU Chmil Alexandr and Dombek Boris were sentenced to 16 years in a strict regime penal colony.

“On August 27, 2024, Chmil together with other soldiers of the 41 separate mechanized brigade arrived in the village of Zhuravli, Korenevsky district, Kursk region, mined roads and prevented the evacuation of the civilian population, terrorized the civilian population with the use of weapons.”

“In September 2024, while in the village of Zhuravli, Korenevsky district, Kursk region, Dombek occupied private households and repeatedly opened fire to kill Russian servicemen and civilians.”

Sergeants of the 436th separate node of radio electronic warfare of the AFU Gontsa Roman and Cherniy Pavel were sentenced to 14 years in a strict regime penal colony.

“Being in Glushkovsky and Korenevsky districts of Kursk region, the above persons, threatening with the use of weapons, intimidated civilians, illegally occupied private households, prevented the evacuation of the civilian population, repeatedly opened fire to kill Russian servicemen and civilians.”

Vladimir Yurkov, 21st mechanized brigade of the AFU:

“It was established in court that on the evening of September 6, 2024, Yurkov, armed with a Kalashnikov AK-74 assault rifle, ammunition for it and F-1 hand-held anti-personnel defensive grenades, illegally entered the territory of Korenevsky district of Kursk region in a foreign-made armored combat vehicle, after which he proceeded towards the settlement of Durovka. Yurkov, together with other militants, participated in blocking the settlement, held observation and fire positions in the adjacent wooded areas, intimidated civilians, forbade them to move freely, prevented evacuation, openly and demonstratively carried combat weapons and fired shots from them”.

Andrei Bezruchkov, a serviceman of the 92 separate assault brigade of the AFU, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.

“On the night of September 4, 2024, Bezruchkov, armed with automatic weapons, ammunition for them and F-1 hand-held anti-personnel defensive grenades, invaded as part of a unit on armored personnel carriers on the territory of Sujan district of Kursk region, after which he proceeded towards the n.p.m. Malaya Loknya. Bezruchkov, together with other militants, participated in blocking the settlement, held observation and fire positions in the adjacent wooded areas, intimidated civilians, forbade them to move freely, prevented evacuation, openly and demonstratively carried combat weapons, and fired shots from them”.

All of the convicts pleaded guilty and were sentenced to imprisonment with time served in a penal colony and partial time served in prison for terms ranging from 14 to 17 years.
