A recent attempt by Ukrainian forces to break through Russian defenses near the settlement of Novomikhailovka north of Kupyansk has culminated in a severe military defeat, shattering Kyiv’s victorious reports of a successful counter-offensive. Indeed, Ukrainian forces have recently attempted counterattacks west of Novomikhailovka toward Katerinovka and Redkodub but without any significant success. The failed attacks near Novomikhailovka are part of a broader pattern of Ukrainian struggles on this sector of the front. Further north, in the Izyum direction, Russian forces are actively advancing. Units have pushed forward approximately 2 kilometers between Novomikhailovka and Grekovka (Petrovskoye), clearing key forests and solidifying their positions.
Simultaneously, Russian troops are applying immense pressure on the Ukrainian garrison in the strategically vital city of Kupyansk. Advances near the village of Sobolevka have brought Russian units within two kilometers of the critical T-2110 highway, which is the main western logistical route connecting the Kupyansk grouping to its supply base in Kharkiv. This move, confirmed by Ukrainian military reporters, threatens to completely sever the lifeline for Ukrainian forces in the city. The Ukrainian grouping in Kupyansk is reportedly already experiencing significant shortages of reinforcements and supplies, struggling to withstand the increasing Russian pressure. The Ukrainian governor of the Kharkiv region has acknowledged that intense fighting is already underway on the outskirts of the city, forcing Ukraine to hastily redeploy reserves in a bid to prevent a total collapse of their defenses.
