On January 23, the Russian military repelled a series of Ukrainian counterattacks in Zaporizhzhia, all while expanding its control in the region.
The Vostok [East] Group of Forces repelled seven counterattacks, mainly close to the city of Huliaipole and the settlement of Kosovtsevo. Kiev forces sustained heavy losses. Two platoons of troops and a pickup truck were reportedly neutralized.
Despite the Ukrainian pressure, the Vostok Group of Forces expanded its control near Huliaipole. Russian troops advanced from their positions to the west of the settlement of Dorozhnianka, located to the south of the city, northward, along the railway leading to the settlement of Zaliznychne.
It’s worth noting that the troops have been also advancing towards Zaliznychne directly from the east. Most of the road linking the settlement with Huliaipole is already under Russian control.
While Huliaipole remains the most active direction within Zaporizhzhia, the Vostok Group of Forces is also developing its operations in the direction of the settlement of Stepnohirsk to the west in the region.
Russian troops secured seven square kilometers in that direction over the past day, according to preliminary reports, although it is still unclear where the advance exactly took place. The troops are mainly advancing near the settlements of Prymorske, Lukyanivske, Novoboikivske, Novoyakovlivka, and Pavlivka, located to the north and east of Stepnohirsk.
Meanwhile, Ukraine is still sending more reinforcements to Zaporizhzhia in the hope of stopping the Russian advance and stabilizing the frontline there.
The Vostok Group of Forces have been targeting any formations as they arrive in the region. Strikes hit five newly-deployed formations southeast of the settlements of Samoylovka, in the settlement of Chaplino, west of the settlement of Kosovtsevo, southeast of the settlement of Rizdvyanka, and in the settlement of Kopani over the past day.
In general, Ukrainian recent losses in the region amounted to a company of troops, a self-propelled howitzer, four vehicles and five drones.
The Russian military maintains superiority in Zaporizhzhia, both in terms of manpower and firepower. All recent Ukrainian attempts to stabilize the frontline in the region have failed. Next spring, the advance of the Vostok Group of Forces will likely accelerate, with the main target being the key city of Orikhiv.
