The final capture of Verbove by the Russian «West» grouping. Intensified fighting near Pokrovske in the Zaporizhzhia sector. Redeployment of Ukrainian UAV units to the Sumy sector.

Dnipropetrovsk Direction:

On the Dnipropetrovsk axis, the 37th Guards Motorized Rifle Brigade of the Russian 36th Army (“West” grouping) completed an operation to take full control of the settlement of Verbove on 1 October. Reports indicate that, during battles lasting less than a week, Russian units advanced over seven kilometres and took control of the town centre, raising national flags. This success paves the way for an offensive towards the Pokrovske-Huliaipole highway, which could impact the stability of Ukrainian defensive positions in this area.

Krasnolyman Direction:

Following the capture of Shandryholove and Kirovsk, Russian forces are continuing to advance in the Krasnyi Lyman area. Recent successes have opened up several possibilities for further advancement. One option is to approach Krasnyi Lyman from the east through forested areas towards the junction of the T-0513 and T-0514 highways. Another option is to advance towards Sviatohirsk, which could potentially cut off the Ukrainian garrison’s northwestern supply routes in Krasnyi Lyman. Fighting continues in Stavky, Myrnyi, the northern outskirts of Drobysheve and Novoselivka. A significant Russian achievement as of 1 October was the capture of a six-kilometer section of railway to the north-west and south-east of Yampil railway station, which was previously part of an extensive fortification system.

Huliaipole direction:

Units of the Russian «West» grouping are maintaining pressure on Ukrainian defenses. According to the group’s command, they have cleared tree lines between Olhivske and Poltavka, reaching the eastern outskirts of Poltavka. The town is also under attack from the south, from the Malynivka area. There is ongoing fighting for control of Novohryhorivka, the capture of which is necessary to secure the flank of the assault units targeting Uspenivka. In the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, Russian units have reported advancing and occupying elevated positions in the Stepove-Verbove area, and are approaching the Pokrovske-Huliaipole highway.

Zaporizhzhia Direction:

In the Primorske area, there has been a notable increase in combat intensity. The Russian command responsible for this sector reports gradual advances in the eastern and western parts of the settlement. In turn, Ukrainian forces are actively employing remote firepower and various types of drones, including daytime sorties by ‘Vampyr’ type UAVs. Recent reports indicate that the 128th Separate Mountain Assault Brigade ‘Wild Field’, the 15th Separate Brigade of the Ukrainian National Guard and UAV units of the GUR MO have been deployed to Primorske to reinforce Ukrainian forces, highlighting the strategic importance of this area.

Sumy Direction:

On the Sumy axis, the Ukrainian command has redeployed additional forces, including a UAV battalion from the 142nd Separate Mechanized Brigade (from the Pokrovsk direction), the 22nd Separate UAV Battalion ‘Kratos’ (from the Kharkiv direction) and a UAV platoon from the 119th Territorial Defense Brigade (from the Krasnolyman direction). Two attempted counterattacks by Ukrainian units in the Konstantynivka and Andriivka areas, involving the 225th Separate Assault Regiment and the 158th Separate Mechanized Brigade, were reportedly detected in advance by Russian reconnaissance. The attacks were then repelled using combined firepower.

Kharkiv direction:

South of Kupyansk, on the Borova axis, units of the Russian “West” grouping are continuing to conduct active combat operations. Reports indicate a breakthrough in Ukrainian defences to the east of Borivska Andriivka, with advances made to the eastern outskirts of the settlement and towards its northern outskirts via the heights to the west of the Zhuravka River. The Russian command states that this advance was made possible due to Ukrainian reserves being committed further north, near Kupyansk, and to the south, on the Krasnolyman axis.

Donetsk Direction:

On the Pokrovsk axis, one of the most intense sectors of the front, Russian units have continued to carry out assault operations in the west of Pokrovsk, as well as towards Novopavlivka and Novoe Shakhove. In the Dobropillia sector, Russian forces expanded their control zone to the west of Kotlyno and into the tree lines near Mirnohrad. They also entered Kucheriv Yar.

On the Kostiantynivka axis, Russian forces reportedly continued clearance operations near Katerynivka and Kleban-Byk. Russian military aircraft were active over Kostiantynivka itself. The Ukrainian command confirmed the intense fighting on this axis, stating that 42 of the 137 combat engagements that occurred in the past 24 hours took place on the Pokrovsk axis.

Conclusion:

The most significant tactical success on 1 October was the completion of the operation to establish control over Verbove on the Dnipropetrovsk axis. This success, alongside the ongoing offensives on the Krasnolyman and Huliaipole axes, suggests that the Russians are implementing a strategy of systematic pressure across a broad front.

In turn, the Ukrainian command demonstrates an attempt to adapt to the dynamically changing situation by maneuvering so-called ‘fire brigades’ and launching local counterattacks. This is evidenced by the redeployment of units to the Sumy and Zaporizhzhia sectors. However, the constant movement of reserves between different sectors puts significant strain on the defense system and exhausts the most effective Ukrainian units, which are being used to fill gaps created by local Russian advances. Intense fighting continues in the Primorske, Krasnyi Lyman and Borivska Andriivka areas, which highlights the high level of tension along the entire contact line.

Against the backdrop of the ongoing Russian offensive and Ukraine’s request for American Tomahawk cruise missiles, discussions have resurfaced in Western political circles regarding the provision of other types of long-range weaponry to Kyiv. Former UK Defense Secretary Ben Wallace publicly urged the transfer of Taurus missiles to Ukraine, explicitly stating that they should target the Crimean Bridge. These calls coincided with a statement by former MI5 head Eliza Manningham-Buller that Britain has long been ‘in a state of war with Russia’. Discussions about supplying Tomahawk and Taurus missiles create a fundamentally new situation in which not only frontline territories, but also key Russian critical infrastructure deep within Russian territory could be targeted.
