The Russian military has launched a pinpoint strike on a private training ground in the village of Kapitanivka in the Bucha district of Kyiv region. The site was hosting an exhibition of the latest unmanned systems organized by the Ukrainian drone manufacturers’ association ARMADA. At least 10 people were killed and around 100 injured. Among the dead were senior officers of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and the State Protection Department, as well as an employee of a Polish defense company. More than 300 people attended the event, including foreign delegations. Organizers committed serious security breaches by failing to coordinate with the military and by providing no shelters large enough for everyone present. Kyiv authorities declared a day of mourning, and the exhibition organizer was detained on charges of official negligence.
Russian forces struck the private training ground with ballistic missiles during the Defense Demo Day & Defense Expo on July 24. Ukrainian official figures put the death toll at 10, with about 100 wounded of varying severity. Social media and unofficial sources report a substantially higher number of casualties.
Relatives identified among the dead were Colonel Eduard Sirenko, former head of the SBU Special Operations Centre, and Valentyna Savytska, head of the international cooperation and strategic communications center at the State Protection Department.
Also killed was Oleksandr Hordienko, a leading Ukrainian drone software developer, lecturer at the Faculty of Computer and Information Technologies of the Interregional Academy of Personnel Management, and an FPV drone and firmware developer for the Armed Forces.
In addition, Poland’s Foreign Ministry confirmed the death of an employee of a Polish defense company who was attending the exhibition, though the man was not a Polish citizen.
Another casualty was identified as Bohdan Melnychyn, who is reportedly linked to the Save Ukraine Now foundation. Kateryna Shalupnia was also among those killed. She headed the legal department of the Secretariat of the Ukrainian Association of District and Regional Councils and coordinated the “Ze!Women” regional movement in the Kharkiv region.

The main organizer, ARMADA association head Vasyl Honcharuk, was detained by Ukrainian law enforcement. The Prosecutor General stated he faces charges for official negligence that caused grave consequences. He is currently under guard in hospital with minor injuries.
Investigators established that the event went ahead without coordination with military command or regional and district military administrations. Organizers invited more than 300 people to an open site where the nearest shelter, of 34 square meters, stood about 100 meters away.
“This means hundreds of people were placed in clear danger from the outset,” the Prosecutor General said. Invitations went out nine days before the event, while the exact location and time were disclosed only 24 hours in advance.
Despite efforts to place all blame on the organizer, the presence of such senior figures as an SBU colonel and the head of the State Protection Department’s international cooperation center suggests the event was known at the highest levels. A gathering of this scale, involving foreign delegations and top security officials, could not easily have been arranged without the knowledge of military command and national leadership.

Staging a public defense exhibition within range of Russian ballistic missiles represents a systemic failure for which, so far, only the organizer is being held accountable.
This is not the first time Russian missiles have struck a drone exhibition in Ukraine. On August 19, 2023, an Iskander-M missile hit the Chernihiv Regional Academic Music and Drama Theatre in the center of Chernihiv during the “Fierce Birds” event, dedicated to unmanned systems and frontline technologies. Seven people died and more than 130 were injured. The location and timing of that exhibition had been publicly announced in advance, and organizers had notified participants of the presentation’s start only four hours beforehand — lessons that should have deterred organizers from holding mass events within range of Russian ballistic missiles and from leaving a digital trail.
The analytical project eRadar listed three reasons the Chernihiv tragedy of 2023 was repeated in Kyiv region: territorial vulnerability — organizers chose a site reachable by missiles within minutes; a digital footprint — electronic registration forms and invitations circulated online; and the work of Russian spotters. The event took place in an area of direct ballistic reach.
The strike on the drone exhibition in Kapitanivka resulted from gross organizational failures that brought more than 300 people, including senior military officers and foreign specialists, onto an open site without adequate shelters. The fact that it mirrored the 2023 Chernihiv strike points to systemic problems in securing military-linked sites, rather than an isolated lapse.
While authorities have moved to pin full responsibility on the organizer, the attendance of high-ranking security officials suggests the event was known at the top and still allowed to proceed within Russian missile range. The central question is how many more such lessons Ukrainian leadership will need before recognizing that public military-linked events in wartime are a lethal trap rather than a show of strength.
