Kiev forces are failing to defend their positions around Kostiantynivka in Donetsk, with recent reports indicating advance by the Russian military’s Yug [South] Group of Forces towards the city from several directions.
By September 23, Russian troops had reportedly captured the southern and central parts of Kleban-Byk, located to the south of Kostiantynivka. The Russian Ministry of Defense seemed to confirm the gains in its daily briefing, saying that troops were “neutralizing the enemy” inside the settlement.
More gains were reported right to the northeast of Kleban-Byk, where Russian troops managed to establish a foothold in Pleshcheevka. Some reports even suggest that the entire southern part of the settlement has been already secured, with clashes taking part in the central part.
To the east of Kostiantynivka, a new push by Russian troops was also reported, with the focal point being Predtechino. Kiev forces are reported to be retreating there.
Recent strikes on the city inflicted heavy losses on Kiev forces, with two recent strikes hitting command centers and deployment points of Ukraine’s 93rd Mechanized Brigade and 24th Mechanized Brigade.
While air and artillery strikes contributed to recent Russian gains near Kostiantynivka, drones appear to be the key factor in the battle there.
In a recent interview with Russian journalist Dmitry Kulko, a commander from the Russia’s 4th Separate Guards Motor Rifle Brigade with the callsign “Rosan” revealed that drones have been hunting down supplies and troops being sent by Kiev forces to Kostiantynivka and its surroundings.
“My FPV (first-person view) drone operators can fly all over Konstantinovka. With a small charge, of course, but it’s enough to blow up a vehicle,” Rosan said.
The commander added that some of the routes used by Kiev forces to move supplies and troops to Konstantinovka are now known as “roads of death,” noting that the length of these supply routes made movement on them more exposed to Russian drone operators.
“They send them over long distances, very, very long distances. That is, 80% do not make it. And the two or three that do make it are destroyed on the spot,” he explained.
Konstantinovka, an industrial city, is more dense than nearby settlements with many high-rise buildings. Still, the recent advance by the Russian military indicates that Kiev forces are failing to organize an effective defense, possibly due to supply problems.
The Russian military could reach the city very soon, if Ukrainian defenses nearby are properly targeted. Still, once the fighting starts there, Kiev forces will likely send large reinforcements, even if it has to move some formations from hot areas like Pokrovsk and Kupyansk.
