Ukraine’s fleet of German-made Flakpanzer Gepard self-propelled anti-aircraft guns has been “exhausted,” Deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Mariana Bezuglaya revealed on April 4.

“The resources of Gepard and other anti-aircraft installations in the capital are almost exhausted. Equipment repairs are mainly carried out at the expense of the crews themselves. Breakdowns can be simple, but the existing system lacks a well-established maintenance cycle, which has not yet been developed by the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine and the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine,” she wrote on the Telegram channel.

According to Bezuglaya, the Ukrainian military is forced to independently seek resources to keep the vehicles in an operational condition.

The Gepard is armed with two 35 mm Oerlikon GDF autocannon, each with 320 rounds anti-air ammunition and 20 rounds anti-tank. The autocannons have a firing rate of 550 rounds per minute each and an effective range of 5.5 kilometers.

The vehicle features a pair of search and tracking radars with a range of 15 kilometers, in addition to an optical targeting sight with a laser range-finder in some versions.

Germany promised to supply Ukraine with a total of 70 Gepard after the start of the Russian special military operation. Most of the vehicles have already been delivered. An additional 60 vehicles were reportedly purchased from Jordan by the United States to be supplied to Kiev forces. Many have already been destroyed or damaged.

Ukraine has mainly deployed its Gepards far behind the frontline, to protect sensitive targets, especially in key cities like Kiev, from cruise missiles and suicide drones. Despite being praised by the Ukrianians, there is no real evidence confirming that the vehicle had much success.

The problems reported by Bezuglaya raise serious questions about the current status of the Ukrainian air defense network. If Kiev forces are struggling to keep a simple system like the Gepard operational, then larger problems are likely facing more complex systems.
