On December 15, the Russian military expanded its control in the key city of Huliaipole and began clearing the left bank of the Haichur River to the north amid what appears to be a complete collapse of Kiev forces in this area between Dnepropetrovsk and Zaporozhye.
After capturing Varvarivka, the last settlement on the right bank of the Haichur to the north of Huliaipole, then crossing the river a day earlier, the Vostok [East] Group of Forces established a bridgehead on the lift bank by capturing Peschanoye in Dnepropetrovsk.
The attack on the settlement was led by the 36th Guards Motorised Rifle Brigade of the 29th Army, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense.
“The occupation of the area expanded the control zone on the west bank of the Gaichur River and created conditions for further assault actions in this direction,” the ministry said in a statement.
During the battle in Peschanoye, Kiev forces lost two platoons of troops from the 92nd Motor Rifle Brigade, in addition to seven pieces of military equipment and more than 20 “Baba Yaga” heavy hexacopters.
The Vostok Group of Forces also managed to establish presence in two other areas south along the left bank of the Haichur in Zaporozhye: to the west of Novo Zaporizhia and to the north Pryluki. Russian troops cleared more than eight square kilometers in both areas.

Further to the south in Huliaipole, things are moving from bad to worse for Kiev forces, with the Vostok Group of Forces in control of more than half of the city.
Russian troops expanded their control in the northern part of the city, reaching its western part. In the city center, the troops broke through Ukrainian defenses in Harsunska Street. Meanwhile, most of the southern part of the city has been reportedly secured.
Kiev forces will not likely be able to organize any meaningful counter attack due to the intense air and artillery strikes targeting any Ukrainian movement inside and around Huliaipole.
The battle in Huliaipole is moving much faster than expected. Kiev appears to be incapable of stopping the collapse of its forces there. The city and the defense line along the Haichur could come under the control of the Russian military before the end of the year.
Further collapse to the west, particularly in Zaporozhye, is to be expected in the case of a Ukrainian defeat. Orikhiv and the defense line along the T-04-08 road to the north of it could end up getting captured by the Russian military within a few months.
