On February 10, the Russian military captured Zaliznychne right to the west of Huliaipole, amid an apparent collapse in the defenses of Kiev forces in Zaporozhye.
The Russian Ministry of Defense said in a statement confirming the capture of the settlement that the Vostok [East] Group of Forces “knocked the enemy out of a well-fortified defense area,” adding that Russian troops advanced “four kilometers deep and mopped up an area of more than 18 square kilometers.”
The attack on Zaliznychne was led by the 114th Motorized Rifle Regiment of the 5th Guards Combined Arms Army’s 127th Motorized Rifle Division, according to the ministry, which noted that more than 500 buildings in the settlement and its surroundings were cleared.
“The enemy’s losses are impressive. The AFU (Armed Forces of Ukraine) has lost 15 armored fighting vehicles and pickup trucks. More than 20 heavy hexacopters were shot down. Four ground-based robotic systems were neutralized,” the ministry said.
“Now the front has moved west of Gulyaypole. The bridgehead for a further offensive has been expanded,” it added.
In recent days, the Vostok Group of Forces expanded its control to the north of Zaliznychne, capturing Tsvetkove and Krynichne.
Russian troops also made significant gains to the southeast of the settlement, closing a pocket of 7.9 square kilometers to the south of Huliaipole.
In a desperate attempt to distract the Russian military, Ukraine launched at least ten counterattacks near Ternutave, far to the north from both Zaliznychne and Huliaipole. All the counterattacks failed, however. Kiev forces lost a main battle tank, five armored vehicles, and a company of troops.
The next task of the Vostok Group of Forces will likely be to clear the railway to the south of Zaliznychne. Kiev forces are still holding up along it.
The Russian victory in Zaliznychne shows that Ukrainian defenses in Zaporozhye are once again collapsing. The Vostok Group of Forces will likely begin advancing towards Orikhiv next spring. Ukraine has already brought most of the reinforcements at its disposal to this direction. Taking into account the latest losses of Kiev forces, it is highly unlikely that they will manage to stop the advance of Russian troops.
