On January 8, the Russian military resumed advance along the Haichur River in Zaporozhye, capturing a key settlement from Kiev forces.
Bratskoye, located on the right bank of the Haichur far to the north from the city of Huliapole, was captured by the 36th Guards Separate Motorised Rifle Brigade of the 29th Army of the Vostok [East] Group of Forces, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense.
“The Group’s assault detachments gained a large enemy defence area of more than nine square kilometres. The Russian military from Transbaikal mopped up more than 170 buildings and structures that units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine used to hold,” the ministry said in a statement.
“The settlement is of a particular tactical importance: its liberation has significantly expanded the foothold on the west bank of the Gaychur River and created favorable conditions for the advance of assault detachments,” it added.
Kiev forces took heavy losses while attempting to hold onto Bratskoye. The 92nd Motor Rifle Brigade reportedly lost two platoons of troops, along with two armored personnel carriers, and more than ten drones, including ground robotic platforms and “Baba Yaga” armed hexacopters.
The capture of Bratskoye solidified the presence of the Vostok Group of Forces on the right bank of the Haichur, which Kiev forces used to launch multiple counterattacks in recent days.
The settlement also brought Russian troops closer to the T0408, one of the main roads leading to the city of Orikhiv, a key logistic and command hub of Kiev forces. The distance between the two is around 35 kilometers. Another push west and the drone units of the Vostok Group of Forces will be able to target the road.
Away from Haichur, to the west in Zaporozhye, the Vostok Group of Forces continue to make gains in the Stepnohirsk direction.
Russian troops made serious gains in Prymorske, expanding their control in the northern part of the settlement. The battle there could end with a Russian victory within a few days as Kiev forces there seem to be incapable of holding onto their positions anymore.
The capture of the settlement would put the Vostok Group of Forces less than 14 kilometers away from the capital of Zaporozhye. This means that any Ukrainian military movement around the city, especially in its southern and eastern outskirts, would be within the range of the group’s drone units.
All in all, Ukraine’s efforts to stabilize the situation in Zaporozhye. The reinforcements brought in recently only increased the losses of Kiev and weakened defenses in other regions. Meanwhile, the Russian military continues to advance in all directions there.
