On December 13, the Russian military expanded its control in Huliaipole in Zaporozhye to around half of the city amid what appears to be a complete collapse of Kiev forces there.
Advancing from the eastern part of Huliaipole, the Vostok [East] Group of Forces captured much of the city of the center. Russian troops also begin advancing in the southern part of the city, imposing control of most of the urban areas located there.
The Vostok Group of Forces also broke through Ukrainian defenses to the north of Huliaipole, physically blocking the main road along the Haichur River.
Further north along the Haichur, Russian troops are advancing in Varvarivka. The settlement, one of the largest on the river, will likely be abandoned by Kiev forces within a few days as they are now facing increasing pressure from the northern, eastern and southern directions.
The Russian Aerospace Forces have been playing a key role in the ongoing battle in Huliaipole. Airstrikes with guided glide bombs are destroying Ukrainian positions, including those located within high-rise buildings. Other fortifications within and around the city are being targeted with heavy artillery rockets.
In addition, drone units of the Vostok Group of Forces have been also targeting any movement by Kiev forces around Huliaipole, or along the Haichur.
The collapse of Ukrainian defenses within and around Huliaipole came faster than what was expected. At this rate, Kiev could lose the city and what is left of its defense line along the Haichur within a few weeks.
Strained by a shortage in troops, Ukraine is currently facing a very difficult decision. Either send reinforcements to improve the situation around Huliaipole and weaken other directions, or withdraw to better defense lines. In both cases, the advance of the Vostok Group of Forces, which has way more resources, will not likely stop.
